There us a precedence for pulling out and letting people get on with their own shit and it worked in the end.

When it was decided that south east Asia was a lost cause the west moved out. It wasn't always pretty but by and large Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos came out the other end on top and are now prosperous thriving nations compared to their former ones. This is what we should be doing.

Of course there is one big hurdle the middle east has which the south east Asians didn't have to jump, zealous religious fanaticism.
