On entering Iraq and Afghan the mission was regime change and they defeated their intended targets very quickly.
Sadly in the case of Iraq they "de-baathisised" the country and sacked all the police and armed forces --a very very large number of trained personnel who took their own weapons with them.
What a bloody stupid idea, imagine sacking all our police and armed forces? They were would be carnage and there was over there.
Finding themselves unemployed and seeing new recruits being western trained they quite rightly got pissed off and attacked and killed many of those new recruits.
Then, and only then, did western forces become embroiled in an Internal Security Operation, gaining intelligence and attacking those responsible and with collateral damage they became more a force of occupation rather than liberators and the rest is history.
Wanting new recruits the bad bastards (for want of a better expression) who tried to fuck up the process of democracy and civil liberties decided to gain more recruits through press gangs, fear and intimidation --if you were told to work for them and refused then both you and your family would pay a heavy price. A very effective way of ensuring people would act as suicide vest, car and truck bombers.
It might have escaped your attention also that with the western forces pulling out those who were robbed of power wanted it back and went out of their way to fuck up a unified Iraq, Sunnis and Shia bad bastards decided to blow up each others Mosques, Christian churches and the Kurds got it from all sides.
However things were not too bad until the Shia heavy government practiced sectarianism against Saddam's Sunni minority (probably with help from Iran) and therefore ISIS were practically welcomed in by the Sunnis and they caused mayhem and genocide.
An international coalition gave advisory and air support and ISIS was defeated. All we can hope is that the factions and religions need to work together to broker a long lasting peace. But that will be a hard call.
Your educated people were most probably coerced into bombing acts by personal bereavement/ loss or threats from within.
So please tell me where the west purposefully targeted civilians??
P.S. Calm down and try and get things right. And secondly you must understand the Afghan situation (well I'm hoping) so I won't type that for you.
