Re: Bringing troops home from Syria

National Security Adviser John Bolton didn’t want it. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo didn’t want it. But President Donald Trump did, and he just finally got it: the official start of the US withdrawal from Syria.

The administration fought openly for weeks about when — and whether — to bring back all 2,000 US armed forces from Syria after Trump’s December announcement that he wanted their swift return.

That policy struggle, which traditionally is first hashed out in private before a decision is announced to the public, exposed deep fissures between Trump and his top national security officials over America’s commitment to the Middle East and the fight against ISIS.

In Israel on Sunday, Bolton told reporters that US troops would stay in Syria until two conditions are met: The remaining ISIS fighters still active in Syria are defeated, and Turkey promises not to attack US-allied Kurdish fighters in Northern Syria after America left.

And on Thursday, Pompeo delivered a speech in Cairo, Egypt, in which he declared that “when America retreats, chaos often follows” and vowed that “America will not retreat until the terror fight is over.”

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that defense officials were continuing with their plans to bring US troops home in accordance with the president’s orders, irrespective of what Bolton or Pompeo had said in recent days.

“Nothing has changed,” an official told the Journal’s Nancy Youssef and Dion Nissenbaum. “We don’t take orders from Bolton.”

The report also noted that there are troops in Kuwait and western Iraq prepared to help their colleagues in Syria leave as well as a ship full of Marines and aircraft headed to the region to protect troops while they withdraw. That would actually increase the number of troops in the area to help the withdrawal process.

ANOTHER U-TURN: U.S. MAY KEEP TROOPS IN AL-TANAF BASE

The U.S. may keep its forces in the al-Tanaf base in southeastern Syria for undetermined amount of time despite President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw all American troops from the war-torn country, a senior administration official told NBC News on January 5.

The American TV channel hinted that the step is aimed at pressuring Syria and Iran as the base is located on a vital international highway that could link Tehran with Beirut through Baghdad and Damascus.

According to the official, National Security Advisor John Bolton, who is on a trip to the Middle East, will take the opinions of Jordanian and Israeli officials before deciding next steps, including how important the base is and whether it has to stay in its current location.

Bolton, Israel and the puppet Jordan, anyone want to predict the decision?

TRUMP’S CLAIMS ABOUT ‘RAPID’ WITHDRAWAL OF TROOPS FROM SYRIA APPEAR TO BE PR MOVE

The U.S. has no timeline to withdraw its forces from Syria but does not plan to stay in the war-torn country indefinitely, a senior official in the Department of State told the Reuters news agency on January 5.

“We have no timeline for our military forces to withdraw from Syria … It will be done in such a way that we and our allies and partners maintain pressure on ISIS throughout and we do not open up any vacuums for terrorists,” the official, who asked not to be identified, said.

Several U.S. officials told Reuters that the withdrawal from Syria could take several months. However, a senior administration official traveling with White House national security adviser John Bolton on a trip to the Middle East said U.S. military commander has assured U.S. President Donald Trump that their mission against ISIS “can be done in weeks.”

Meanwhile, other U.S. officials revealed to Reuters that a pre-scheduled conference for the counties participating in the US-led coalition have become a part of ongoing “damage control efforts” following Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria.

Like I said from the start, I'll believe it when Al Tanf is cleared. I suspect it never will be...

He's right about a great deal of our press. They are saying pulling troops out of Syria is a bad idea. Of course, that's a very recent position. :ooer:

You're not the policeman of the world. That's the propaganda to cover up reality.

It's US hegemony and control followed by asset stripping that leads to the US all over the world.

Felch you really are so ill informed, don't you know what stopped the Warsaw Pact invading western europe during the Cold War? Learn some history instead of reading shite on conspiracy sites.

Maybe they are imaginary. I bet there are really no US troops in Europe or Japan either. :gigglesnshit:

Maddog what you fail to understand is that the very top earners theoretically earn nothing.

The people who own the politicians and get to write the tax rules have them written so the money the get isn't 'income', and depending how good your accountant is it can actually come out as a liability. Details of some of the tax dodges are contained in the reports on Trump's tax affairs but the easiest one is being the director of a company registered in one of the more obliging states or an off shore territory.

The way it works is that your company is paid your salary, your company loans you your salary in the USA at a suitable rate of interest - so according to the US tax code you're due a refund - and you repay them in another country or state, with the right accountant you then get to 'on-shore' your profits with a hefty tax incentive for bringing in investment from overseas.

Trump's inner circle is full of people who use those kinds of arrangements - acts which individually are legal but in concert establish a 'pattern of behaviour' as the words of art have it. So you may well be earning much more than the 1%, in fact a dishwasher in your local diner may be earning much more than them - at least as far as the IRS is concerned - until you, or the IRS, take a closer look.

Cool story.

Story implies fiction whereas the fact this is truth is easily verifiable. One need only read Mueller's indictments to see more than one instance where minor variants of this scheme were used
