‘Morally Despicable’: Trump Administration Threatens to Veto UN Resolution Combating Rape as Weapon of War

In what critics denounced as the Trump administration’s latest attack on women’s rights across the globe, U.S. officials are reportedly threatening to veto a United Nations Security Council resolution seeking to end the use of rape as a weapon of war over its language on reproductive health.

According to the Guardian—which first reported on U.S. opposition to the measure late Monday—Trump officials are objecting to the resolution’s “language on victims’ support from family planning clinics.”

“In recent months, the Trump administration has taken a hard line, refusing to agree to any U.N. documents that refer to sexual or reproductive health, on grounds that such language implies support for abortions,” the Guardian reported. “It has also opposed the use of the word ‘gender,’ seeing it as a cover for liberal promotion of transgender rights.”

The Trump administration’s opposition to the measure, proposed by Germany, quickly sparked international outrage.

“If we let the Americans do this and take out this language, it will be watered down for a long time,” an anonymous European diplomat told the Guardian. “It is, at its heart, an attack on the progressive normative framework established over the past 25 years.”

Heather Barr, acting co-director of the women’s rights division at Human Rights Watch, tweeted:

“In the latest step in Trump’s war on women, U.S. opposes healthcare for survivors of rape during war. Yes, you read that right.”

Others also took to Twitter to condemn the Trump administration’s efforts:

He'll do anything to keep the support of the rabid fundamental Christians (not just the bible belt)

From the Shane Bauer piece

For others, the militia provides a justification for violent fantasies of insurrection. In 2010, a man in Idaho trained members of his militia to build bombs to fight off a communist invasion. The following year, the head of the Alaska Peacemakers Militia conspired to kill a judge and police officers. Also in 2011, members of a militia in Georgia planned to attack government buildings and random people with the deadly poison ricin, all to save the Constitution. In 2014, another group of Georgia militiamen planned to bomb federal facilities because they believed it would spark martial law and provoke a militia uprising. David Burgert, a Montana militia leader, shot at police officers shortly after being released from prison, where he’d served time for possessing illegal weapons as part of a conspiracy to assassinate cops and criminal justice officials to trigger a patriot revolution. He disappeared into the woods and remains at large. This October, three men belonging to a Kansas militia called the Crusaders were charged with domestic terrorism for allegedly plotting to bomb Somali immigrants on the day after the election.

And there was Forever Enduring, Always Ready (FEAR), a small Georgia militia consisting of active-duty soldiers who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2011, its leader, Isaac Aguigui, asphyxiated his pregnant wife to get her life insurance money. He then spent nearly $90,000 on guns and ammo for the militia. He intended to buy land for training militias in Washington state and to further fanciful plots such as poisoning the state’s apple supply, bombing a park, assassinating Obama, and ultimately overthrowing the government. When a teenage friend of Aguigui who was not a FEAR member heard about some of its plans, two militia members shot him and his girlfriend. Aguigui is now serving life in prison.

Like i said... Absolute fucking psychopaths.

The difference being that in general schools and doctors are providing a worthwile service meanwhile these militias are deranged nutjobs armed to the teeth and eagerly awaiting an opportunity to play rambo regardless of who they fuck up while doing so.

Great piece here by journalist Shane Bauer who went undercover with these militia types

apparently some of the coyotes are fond of a bit of rape too so maybe we should stop the border crossings altogether? that way they wouldn't get raped crossing the border, when they get detained by right wing militias, in the detention centers

Or we could stop making it illegal to cross the border so that people can take the safer apporach where their lives are not endangered. Less risk of being raped, or dying of thirst, on a plane or a coach compared to walking across a 500 mile desert

If that's the case then why are you concerned about possible child molesters arresting people at the border when there are actual child molesters working in the detention center?

Considering they'd be handing them off to the police it would be a pretty fucking dumb thing for a chilmo to be doing.

Of course child molestation is something legal immigration control gets up to as well

Thousands of migrant children allegedly sexually abused at US detention centres, records show

Number of complaints increased when Trump's family separation policy was in place, according to Justice Department data

Something about this kind of anti-immigration politics that attract the very worst kind of people

Minuteman Civil Defense Corps co-founder Chris Simcox found guilty of child molestation

The group in the video I posted claims to have detained 3,500 over the last month... mostly kids.

Lets hope these right wing nutters have no child molesters amongst their ranks :ooer:

Shawna Forde, the anti-immigrant vigilante leader who orchestrated the murder of a Latino man and his 9-year-old daughter, will receive the death penalty, a Pima County, Ariz., jury decided today.

Forde was convicted on Feb. 14 of two counts of murder for the killing of Raul Flores and his daughter, Brisenia, in May 2009, along with the attempted murder of the child’s mother. She was also convicted of two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of aggravated robbery, armed robbery and burglary.

Forde led her two followers into the Flores home in Arivaca, Ariz., believing that Raul Flores was a drug dealer who would have plenty of cash on hand. Prosecutors have said that Bush was the gunman and first shot Flores dead and then shot his wife in the leg. He then allegedly walked over to Brisenia, who was sleeping with her puppy on the couch, shooting her twice in the head at close range.

Yes. And the person in your tweet is wrong. They do have a right to detain people crossing the border illegally. Their confusion stems from the fact that crossing the border is a federal misdemeanor/civil offense. It's only illegal to perform a citizens arrest on an illegal immigrant if you don't catch them in the act of crossing the border.
