Sorry, but that's not what they said.
Their actual findings were that they could rule out any other big beasties by DNA analysis, but that eel DNA was found. The 'giant eel' bit was just to fit the legend, they haven't any evidence of it. They have to keep the story alive just for tourist's cash.
