I don't think that is true because I have a paper license and so does my other half - I don't like having my picture taken so unless they change the rules I won't be renewing it because I have lived in my house for 25 years and that was the last time I renewed it because of change of address.

Thanks Jon. So just hold onto my paper licence. There is obviously no point at the moment renewing it for a photocard licence.

They do and that is part of the problem. The long term future (say up to 50 years) of the private motor vehicle is unsustainable.

You were talking about increasing freight traffic. That is good, but every additional freight train takes up an additional train path and there is only so much you can do with the existing network in terms of capacity enhancements, so some new lines will have to be built and re-opened.

The answer to congestion on the railways is to build more of them

The answer to congestion on the roads is not to build more of them.

How do you square that circle jra?

And how often do you use the roads and actually go outside of your immediate area?

The road network is pretty well complete, whereas the railway network isn't, e.g. after the Beeching Cuts.

Completion wasn't the reason, congestion was and the easing of it.

Every night he stays up guarding his house from it's inmates.
He doesn't drive.
He I think is afraid of leaving the house in case anything untoward happens to it but in this modern world where he doesn't work then staying at home is a laudable near carbon neutral contribution to society if you believe in that stuff.

Ha Ha ... Does he work in some kind of prison?

I have been driving since I was 17 years old and I made sure my children could drive as soon as they were able to take their test - my son passed his test first time at 17 years of age - I think he takes after me. My daughter is a good driver but happened to take her first test in busy city during the rush hour so she failed but passed on her second attempt.

Why does he not drive? I find that odd because all my men pals couldn't wait to get a car and take their driving tests.

When I say I don't drive it means I don't currently have my own car. I have had a full manual driving licence (passed first time) since the age of 25 valid until I am 70. I may have to renew it, as apparently paper licences aren't valid any more. But I won't have to take my driving test to get it renewed AFAIK.

Well JT I had you down as our resident trains expert but no longer.
You cannot build around anything if you want a truly high speed line.

It has to be as straight as possible.
Osbourne when chancellor demanded the line avoided his families country pile in Cheshire .... there was uproar from the engineers and planners as a large curve would have to be built into the track.
How that little episode ended I don't know because of a clear lack of any real interest.
I'm sure you could Google it though.
HS lines do not have curves bends and build arounds.

I think you'll find that high-speed lines do have curves, although the curve radii are so small most people wouldn't notice.

Watch the vid for a few minutes. The train is going at 350km/h. Still slight curves though.

Look, guys. If you want to troll the thread, give me a reason for being here?

What a strange thing to say :dunno:

Talk of boilers and being afraid to leave the house in an HS2 thread isn't trolling?

Not near carbon neutral Jack, he has a big powerful boiler he must have on all night to keep him warm whilst on guard duty. :shake head:

Oh yeah I forgot about the boiler!
