The road network is pretty well complete, whereas the railway network isn't, e.g. after the Beeching Cuts.

He doesn't drive.
He I think is afraid of leaving the house in case anything untoward happens to it but in this modern world where he doesn't work then staying at home is a laudable near carbon neutral contribution to society if you believe in that stuff.

I have been driving since I was 17 years old and I made sure my children could drive as soon as they were able to take their test - my son passed his test first time at 17 years of age - I think he takes after me. My daughter is a good driver but happened to take her first test in busy city during the rush hour so she failed but passed on her second attempt.

Why does he not drive? I find that odd because all my men pals couldn't wait to get a car and take their driving tests.

You cannot build around anything if you want a truly high speed line.
It has to be as straight as possible.
Osbourne when chancellor demanded the line avoided his families country pile in Cheshire .... there was uproar from the engineers and planners as a large curve would have to be built into the track.
How that little episode ended I don't know because of a clear lack of any real interest.

HS lines do not have curves bends and build arounds.

I think you'll find that high-speed lines do have curves, although the curve radii are so small most people wouldn't notice.
