Hartlepool by-election hangs in the balance as Tories surge

Hartlepool is on a knife-edge
It would mark only the third time a governing party had won a by-election from the opposition in nearly 40 years;
the Conservatives don’t yet have a candidate; and most bookies will tell you that Labour is the favourite.

Yet the first poll of the campaign suggests Sir Keir Starmer is in real danger of losing Hartlepool.
It is the first poll to project the result of a contest that will — rightly or wrongly — be viewed by many as the definitive judgment on the first year of his leadership.

You do realise that a few days ago the Tories were confident of taking Hartlepool?

(Ladbrokes make the Tories hot odds on favourites to take Hartlepool in the first Westminster by-election)

Oh I see, that was 8 days ago. Now, instead of 1/2 Tories, 13/8 Labour, things have changed. Latest odds 10/11 favourites Labour, 11/10 Tories.

No wonder confidence has, shall we say, slumped.

Not that solid then.

It's fun watching him try to spin that

No worries Cannydc
Yougov has just published a new poll with the Conservative lead at 9%
You must admit, if the country thought the same way as you about how this government was doing, Labour would be miles ahead.
But they’ve not even raised a semi since the 2019 wipe out
Never mind, there’s a real poll in just 6 weeks time
I’m sure that Starmer will have some rabbits to pull out of the hat.

Trouble up mill Mr Arkwright

Sir Keir Starmer's critics in Labour become increasingly vocal

Nearly a year after Sir Keir Starmer became Labour leader, he is being accused of not listening to grassroots activists and not being strident enough in opposition.
The focus of the discontent is his reluctance to call for an increase in corporation tax amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
Those on the party's left are now publicly critical, but some current shadow ministers are privately worrying whether the party's positioning on the issue is right.

And in a pre-Budget speech on Monday, another former shadow cabinet member, Richard Burgon, declared that unless Labour is bolder, it could be outflanked on business taxes by the Conservatives.

I'm watching an increasingly RW Labour party moving in on former tory ideas and policies as the tories further embrace far-right ideology and populism in a bid to retain power, having been centre left for a long time I'm struggling to know where put my X at the next election.

Are you worried about the local elections?
I'll be voting on local issues
I'm thinking that nationally, the Conservatives are stealing the centre ground
And Starmer is firing blanks.
And Labour is stuck in the polls about 6% behind

But, don't worry - more that 3 years to go to the next general election - Thursday 2 May 2024

There are no locals where I currently live. I helped to get two LD councillors elected locally a couple of years ago.

The next GE may not affect me.

What, not Libdem? (Obviously if you vote tactically, well done).

I think you should sit back and simply watch the Tory Brexit party implode. There's a lot of water to flow under the bridge in the next 3 years.

Vote for a councillor who does right by your area, worry about political directions later.

There's a move in the air and I may have another option.

E2A: I'm a member of LD and an activist but they're a bit hollow at the moment. I did vote tactically last time and it made FA difference.

I know there's a move again to get PR, but with an 80 majority the Tories will cock a deaf air to that. There's more chance of ousting them if a deal is done between parties to stand down in favour of best placed opposition candidate. That will take some work to make happen too.
