It's happening around you now.India so far being forced to experiment by America and being very painful for those at the bottom of the pile.
Banks are disappearing fast.
Some towns here it is now impossible to get cash other than spending and asking for cash back.

I don't think the
WHOLE of society will become cashless anytime soon Rollup, which is what the thread title is asking.
Cos we keep getting new coin designs and new polymer notes, in fact in 2020 new £20 plastic notes will be issued.
I doubt the govt would be making such a heavy investment in something it plans to phase out.
Granted, an increasing number of businesses do prefer cashless transactions.
