Doesn’t Thomas Cruise still pretend?
Even Elton John was.
Although being gay doesn't carry the stigma it once used to, it's probably still seen as something that could limit an actor's chances at landing leading man roles.
There's quite a lot of gay mainstream movies out these days, but they look pretty boring tbh. Gay characters in regular movies are perfectly normal and acceptable, but films that put 'being gay' above a decent storyline tend to be not very good. They seem to focus on curly headed teens in white Y-fronts, sitting around a swimming pool in Greece or the South of France being bummed by someone called 'Sebastian'
Other than Brokeback Mountain I don't think I've watched many films where the lead character was gay or that it was the main theme.
I believe women who marry gay men (knowing they're gay) are called beards. Image is pretty important in Hollywood, bankability, etc.
The song 'Band of Gold' pretty much covered it.
