Yeah you weren't told by leaving the EU you'd lose access to the internal energy market which subsidizes wholesale energy rises, keeping prices low. No it's meant to be spent on road maintenance. UK is one of the highest taxed countries in the west and always has been. It is NOT a cheap country to live in.

No i'm not 'defending' it at all. You asked what the tax was for so I told you. I doubt you'd find one motorist here who thinks the tax is fair, reasonable and justified, but the choice is go without a car and that won't work for everyone. Public transport isn't cheap and not always practical (eg it's useless if you're a shift worker).
