On 1st February 2019, Britain lodged it's first successful conviction for FGM, it has in fact been illegal here since 1985. A mother and her partner were charged with performing the procedure, although only the mother was found guilty. The Judge has stated she would receive a "lenthy" sentence. He was true to his word, she was sentenced to 14 yrs on 8th March 2019.
There are also steps being considered to amend the Childrens' Act in order for the Courts to be able to issues Protection Orders if they think a girl is at risk of FGM.
Sadly, backbench Conservative Sir Christopher Chope, blocked a FMG related Private Members Bill passing it's Second Reading in the House of Commons.
