Our right wing politicians have hated the miners for many a long year, Tom. The Tories would rather the lights go out than subsidise British jobs in British coal mines. They would rather pay double for Russian gas.

Labour closed more mines than tories.
Coal is a dirty fuel. Do you think we should burn coal rather than gas?

Labour didn't close mines out of sheer spite, they closed them when the seams ran out, or mines became dangerous due to gas or water ingress - and in complete agreement with the miners themselves and the miner's union.

Coal is a much cleaner fuel these days. New technologies reduce emissions, but there are other reasons that coal might be at least as good and safe fuel as gas. Natural gas produces less carbon dioxide per unit energy than coal does, making it appear at first glance as a cleaner fuel. But natural gas is predominantly composed of methane, a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Coal is definitely back in the game, at least in the near future until nuclear and renewables take over.

The point is, we are running out of gas, and importing more and more. Meanwhile we sit on considerable stocks of unmined coal.

Wow. Surely you are deliberately misunderstanding. No one can be so badly deluded.

Labour closed more mines. The mines left were loss making and totally controlled by militant lefties holding the country to ransom for 20-30% pay rises year on year by bullying all other workers out on strike. It was a. Poorly masked attempt by the far left to seize power.

These seams that are lying untapped- why have the multinational mining firms not moved in and mined them? Afterall there is unlimited cheap labour to be drawn from EU.

Answer. Its the boringly obvious one. Same as it was in 80's. They can not be profitably mined you plum.

As for coal being clean. Well your just jumping the shark.

Why do idiot Tory supporters ALWAYS treat facts with complete derision when they don't match the agenda of Tory dogma ?

I have no opinion on your so called conservatives in the uK. I know nothing about them.
But 'propping up' an industry on a permanent basis is no way to run any economy. Better to make trade agreements
fair and open(which I DO give credit to labor for supporting) so your own energy industry is treated fairly and not undercut.
If conservatives werent supporting FAIR trade then i gotta criticize your conservatives.

Our miners were producing a greater tonnage per hour than anyone else but German coal was subsidized by the government making it impossible to compete.

What Germany were doing was illegal but that didn't seem to matter.
We should have done what Gemany did .... worked for them.

You debate?

:haha: :haha: :haha: :haha:

When facts, published by the Conservative Party, are presented in a blog you call it fake news.
Yet you vote Conservative. Don't like you like hard data published by the Conservative Party?

Im afraid what canny and jack have produced here goes beyond fake news into anti-fact/anti-news territory.

At the time UK north sea oil and gas was coming on stream far cheaper and cleaner.

British mines were producing coal at £44/tonne even when massively subsidised by taxpayers. The UK gov then had to pay users to use it as imported coal was about £22/tonne.

Hard left (militant communists-scargil-scum) tried to overthrow the elected UK gov.

Coal is a filthy fuel. Canny blind partisan nonsense cant change that fact.

https://www.economicshelp.org/blog/6498 ... -industry/

There are some dinosaurs in the UK who never moved on. Pound to a penny canny is one of those.
