Canary Islands Government Raises El Hierro Volcanic Alert

Postby Northern » Tue Sep 27, 2011 11:35 am

Nah, he's on the mainland, the Canaries are off the coast of Africa. That volcano isn't on the larger more touristy islands either. I love the Canaries :wubwub:

I've checked BBC news & seen no recent updates, perhaps the risk is now receeding?? If anything, it's the Phillipines on the other side of the world which is having monsoons & such, those poor ppl.

Hold that thought Kat...

Update 05/11 – 20:46 UTC :
IGN and CSIC scientists have noticed ash particles in the steam coming out of the jacuzzi’s. We have the impression that the Ramon Margaleff may have informed Pevolca, as the oceanographic ship was seen on the grey stain close to the vents.

Update 05/11 – 20:46 UTC :
Joke friend, the La Restinga Human webcam :) , just arrived from the village. She said that a car with loudspeakers is driving through the village calling for the evacuation. UME (military emergency unit) is helping with the evacuation. People are calm and are overpowered with what happens.
At first people of La Restinga thought that the big black bubble was a boat. They were really surprised that it was the volcano getting more active.

Important update 05/11 – 18:10 UTC :
EVACUATION CALLED AT LA RESTINGA (‘source : Diario El Hierro) due to the stronger coastal activity and toxic gases. Pevolca also fears that the the current activity may come closer to the coast.

VERY IMPORTANT Update 05/11 – 18:36 UTC :
We do not like to call it “Breaking news” in the title, but we just received a confirmation from Raymond Matabosch that he sees at this moment at least 5 Jacuzzi’s getting stronger.
Some jacuzzi’s are taking the effect of low geyser activity.
Raymond can see this at this moment from his location somewhere on the coast.

Which one> Ibiza,majorca?

The Canaries, being off in to the atlantic some way west of western sahara would seem far enough away as to cause little trouble for anyone apart from the canarians themselves.

And..

Caldera de Taburiente Isla de palma :ohshi:

In a BBC Horizon programme broadcast on October 12, 2000, two geologists (Day and McGuire) hypothesised that during a future eruption, the western flank of the Cumbre Vieja, with a mass of approximately 1.5 x1015 kg, could slide into the ocean. This could then potentially generate a giant wave which they termed a “megatsunami” around 650–900 m high in the region of the islands. The wave would radiate out across the Atlantic and inundate the eastern seaboard of North America including the American, the Caribbean and northern coasts of South America some six to eight hours later. They estimate that the tsunami will have waves possibly 160 ft (49 m) or more high causing massive devastation along the coastlines. Modelling suggests that the tsunami could inundate up to 25 km (16 mi) inland – depending upon topography.

It has been said that if that particular baby goes off and half a mountain hits the water, the resulting tsunami will hit the UK.

Worse, it will go North and South around the UK, with both waves meeting in the North Sea.

This would massively increase power, and subsequent damage, from Hull to London, and all points between.

Millions may die.
