Terrible accident in Somerset

Postby Cannydc » Sat Nov 05, 2011 7:19 am

Police say 'several' have died and many injured in huge crash on M5. At least 20 cars and 6 lorries involved - and the lot went up in a fireball.

Causes being cited are heavy rain and fog, or the distraction of a local fireworks display.

Having driven in pouring rain on the A14 the other night, and seeing nose to tail traffic piling past at over 90mph, accidents seem inevitable.

It was very foggy out on the roads down here last night. What a terrible thing to happen.

Terrible news, some of those killed motorists were obviously commuters who were returning home for the weekend, to their loving families, so sad.

Ppl should match their speed to road conditions. A foggy wet night is not the time to drive nose to tail at 70 mph or whatever !! They could have done without the alleged distraction of nearby fireworks too.

This will widen the debate if the speed limit should increase from 70 mph to 80mph.

That said, if visibility was bad,, the report should reveal if warning signs were posted for motorists to reduce their speed.
