that is nowt to do with bricks n concrete
and eveything to do with design

I'm aware of that Frank, but isn't it possible to reinforce these homes in some way in order to minimize damage?

Its brick built BTW.

Bumped for Ali

Its called "upgrading".

I've been in the states during a Hurricane they are fierce, so he has a well built house.

Yes of course Guest, I did see that, so why the fuck do people still build their homes out of wood.

a hurricane would just suck the roof of and the people out anyway
and leave the reinforced brick walls standing
we are talking building concrete gun emplacment type structures
to withstand a tornado and any windows with blast shutters covering them
a tornado unleashes as much localised power as a nuke
almost nothing survives a direct hit

I'm not saying people should just stay in the houses during this time Frank, a properly built shelter is invaluable but a roof is a darn sight easier and inevitably cheaper to replace than a whole bloody house.

bricks tho are expensive compared to timber
like 60% more per sq foot or summat silly
and as i said it wouldnt protect the interior anyway
and i doubt it would be just a case of put a new roof on
youd have to demolish and rebuild it anyway

I still think there is more chance of your house surviving if it were built out of brick than there is if it is built out of wood.

Not every house takes a direct hit from a tornado but the winds associated with it would still easily demolish a wooden house with ease whereas a brick built one might not fall down.

Bloody hell Frank, those winds we had back in January down south (don't know if you got them up north) would have taken out a wooden built house with ease.

Excellent advice Ali

One of the first things we put into our house was a outside generator, Its partially underground. Thats also where we go when we get any tornado alerts, luckily we have never had to use it.

a peice of 2 by 4 wood throw by a tornado
will easily make it thru a brick wall
like a javelin thru butter
a peice of straw at that speed would
go right thru your head and out the otherside
them winds we experianced were nothing in comparison
you not getting the sheer magnitude
an f5 tornado could even demolish a 5 ton concrete gun emplacement
just suck it of the earth and throw it a mile or so away

But if the houses weren't built out of wood then no wood would be flying about the place and if everyone had the sense to go into a shelter then people wouldn't get killed.

Yes' i'm just being a bit pedantic now Frank, but to be honest would you rather live in a brick house or wood house if you lived in an area where this sort of thing happened form time to time.

I know which I would rather live in.

im saying it make precious little difference
so i can see why the build cheap with storm cellars
and they all go into the cellars as soon as theres warning
its like the 60's adverts saying duck and cover will prevent injury from a nuclear bomb

A lot of people like the look of a wood home, and many of these homes were built years ago. Besides, the areas that were hit by these tornadoes are not really in Tornado Alley. The vast majority of the people that live in that area, will never see a tornado in their lives.

u need no heatin or insulation etc
a water tight shed with rooms is all you need
very cheap to replace

only my storm cellar would be a concrete bunker
