Student dies after jail in North Korea

Student dies after jail in North Korea

Postby Si_Crewe » Tue Jun 20, 2017 8:31 pm

Anybody seen this story?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40308028

Bunch of yank kids go on holiday to North Korea.
One of them decides to steal a propaganda poster off a hotel wall.
Gets caught.
Makes a televised "confession", admitting to be an evil capitalist pawn sent by the USA to carry out criminal acts against NK.
Having done that, he gets banged-up in an NK prison for seventeen months.

The NK authorities then have a sudden burst of compassion and decide to send him home to the USA.
When he arrives back in the USA it turns out he's actually in a coma, with severe brain damage.
And then he dies 6 days after getting home.

Un-fucking-believable.

Coroner's report suggests he sustained the brain damage as a result of contracting botulism.
NK is claiming he took sleeping pills while he was ill which aggravated the condition.
All, apparently, while he was in prison.

So, with tinfoil hat firmly in place, anybody else wonder if the north koreans might've deliberately poisoned this poor guy?
Wonder how many dissidents in NK die of "botulism" every year?

That seems a bit harsh.

Wouldn't want to go to NK myself but there is, apparently, something of a tourism industry there.
Definitely a bit stupid to try and nick stuff while there but hardly justifies 17 months in jail, much less his death.

Sad irony being that he was probably a very open-minded, liberal, person who wanted to go to NK to prove that people are the same all over the world. :shake head:

I doubt rich kids need to steal north korean propaganda posters to supplement their trust funds.

More likely, he just wanted a cool souvenir of his trip to NK.

I see he was sentenced to 15 years hard labour for his crime.

Have to agree with that.

If they're half as nutty as they're depicted, I doubt you'd even have to DO anything wrong to risk being detained if they felt like it.

Fuck that shit.

"The awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today." :dunno:
Where did that come from?

Presumably from the results of the yank coroner's examination.

Seems nobody was told there was anything wrong with the kid all the time he was in NK custody (including a guy who was petitioning for his release) and yet now the koreans are saying he contracted botulism and slipped into a coma almost immediately after being imprisoned.

The yanks are saying there was no signs of botulism but the WAS significant brain damage which would suggest that something bad happened to the kid while in jail.
He IS dead, after all.

There were no signs of physical abuse.

How many times in the last hundred years and more have these kinds of stories been sold to us that turn out to be bullshit?
I am not willing to jump on these stories as if they just have to be true.
Here's another .... are we about to flatten the place is the first thing that comes to my mind .... based on previous events just like this ......

Inside North Korea's barbaric prisons where inmates are starved, tortured, undergo forced abortions and dig their own graves

How many of you believed the baby incubator story in Kuwait?
My first thought was where the would these guys sell such things once they got back home?
My second thought being this has to be bullshit .... sorry more .... bullshit.
Did your grand parents believe that German troops were shoving the spike on their helmets through babies and roasting them alive and eating them?
Millions did at the time.
Oh how easy it is to manipulate the masses with the same old kind of stories over and over.
I'm guessing it's time to say goodbye Kim your time is up.
