No point in sacking a computer.

And, no doubt, the poor underpaid sod tasked with putting in new reams of data to cope with the circumstances of hundreds of families will be happy to find he is out of a job for missing one payment cancellation out.

"It's the same the whole world over, it's the poor what gets the blame, it's the rich what gets the pleasure, ain't it all a fucking shame"

I guess the legal argument would be that they need to keep paying their rent in order to avail themselves of whatever facilities the local authority is providing to those people who find themselves inconvenienced as a result of this incident.

Morally, of course, it's a bit of a cunt's trick and I'd hope that the tenants can pursue the matter and either get a rebate for any time they're left homeless or, at the very least, the local authority might see fit to work that rebate in as a reduced rent charge over the next 12 months or something.

I'd certainly hope this will happen and it's just a case of overcoming bureaucratic inertia before it does.

There is no legal argument - this is a direct debit/standing order cock-up whipped into a frenzy to further bash the Tory council - lovely jubbly. :Wiiiine!:

Wrong.

FFS Si. The council is 100% responsible for this whole fuck up.
Any manager worth their salt would have suspended any rent payments the following day.
Over two fucking weeks later they are still taking money out of people's accounts.
Even accounts of the dead and missing.

Catherine Faulks’ ‘Extraordinary’ BBC Radio 4 Interview On Grenfell Tower Leads To Calls For Her To Resign

‘Digging herself into her own resignation’.

When asked why the council had allowed it to happen Faulks said: “Oh come on, that’s a tiny thing - I mean it’s not a tiny thing for them it’s a huge thing and it’s very upsetting.”

The dismissive comment sparked a torrent of disbelief on social media where it was branded “ill-judged” and a PR disaster that may result in her having to resign.

Some lady on LBC said that her friend had been charged after she checked her balance on the cashpoint with her new debit card, not heard anything else but it seems a bit mad that the council is paying out HB only to claim it back as rent on a ruined property.

It's going to take a while for the systems to work things out. Imagine if a plane dropped out of the sky and hit a local housing estate, how would your council react?

I asked our housing association how long would it take to stop the rent on one postcode if that postcode was finished because of fire.
About 6 seconds per flat for three tick boxes to be checked then entered.

129 flats take away the dozen or so owned by leaseholders, so about 6 minutes.
Roughly.

They probably let the lady who did tasks like that go, years ago.

You don't think there's anything batshit-crazy about demanding that all the tories on the council should be sacked but apparently not the labour members?

Cos obviously, all the tories members were complicit in any wrongdoing, and ONLY the tory members, and certainly not any of the labour members, right?

Their rabid delusions would be funny if it weren't for the fact some people seem to be naive enough to take their ranty bollocks seriously.

What are you twattering on about? The Tories are in power in RBKC and are in control of EVERY DEPARTMENT. If you think those in charge, who are negligent, are NOT Tories then you are not only stupid but blind to how councils work in England. So do you blame Labour Councillors in RBKC for the cheaper cladding, which was passed by the Tory council or the Tories who are in charge?

What are you twattering on about?

You think tory councillors in, say, the highways department, or the education department, should be fired because people in the housing department fucked up?
And it's logical to sack a heap of people who had nothing to do with it simply because they're tories but NOT sack any of the labour councillors, regardless of any involvement?

I know it's a pretty wacky idea but, personally, I'd rather just fire (and then prosecute) anybody found to be responsible for the fire regardless of the political party they are affiliated with.

Saying that ALL the tory councillors should arbitrarily be fired but none of the labour councillors should be fired is just batshit-crazy partisan political bullshit though.
Which is what people should expect from Skwarkbox.
