I guess it refers to Catholics belief in purgatory which has no biblical reference. It was basically a way to shake down their followers. You pay the church indulgences to decrease the time a loved one spends in purgatory. That was one of Luther's beefs with the church.

RIP - or Rest in Peace - is traditionally Catholic. Jokingly transposed to Rise If Possible as it was, as you might expect, inscribed on the gravestones of many who died in the cause of Irish Nationalism.

IHS - or I Have Suffered - is traditionally Protestant. It refers to the Calvinist ideal of foregoing pleasure and doing acts of personal penance that may be simply uncomfortable - like self-flagellation - or acts of charity that involve self sacrifice.
