Orange Order: Protestants should not use RIP

Orange Order calls on Protestants not to use the phrase 'RIP'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-40705687

The Orange Order has asked its members to stop using the term 'RIP' to express grief or sympathy after a death.
It said the phrase is unbiblical, un-Protestant, and a form of superstition connected to Catholicism.
RIP is an abbreviation of 'rest in peace' or in Latin, 'requiescat in pace'.
In a publication marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the order called on Protestants to stop using the phrase.

Using RIP is a form of Catholic propaganda or something :dunno:

I guess it refers to Catholics belief in purgatory which has no biblical reference. It was basically a way to shake down their followers. You pay the church indulgences to decrease the time a loved one spends in purgatory. That was one of Luther's beefs with the church.

Anyway, protestants the world over use the phrase all the time. The guy is talking out of his ass.

RIP - or Rest in Peace - is traditionally Catholic. Jokingly transposed to Rise If Possible as it was, as you might expect, inscribed on the gravestones of many who died in the cause of Irish Nationalism.

IHS - or I Have Suffered - is traditionally Protestant. It refers to the Calvinist ideal of foregoing pleasure and doing acts of personal penance that may be simply uncomfortable - like self-flagellation - or acts of charity that involve self sacrifice. Never ones to be outdone the Catholics jokingly transpose this epitaph to In Hell Surely

Bottom line RIP = Catholic IHS = Protestant WTFCYBWF (Who The Fuck Cares You're Both Worm Food) = Sensible people
