Data

This is a very interesting read and very disturbing too.
I was going to put it in Stooos petrodollar thread but realised it doesn't really belong there.
So then I was going to put it in the latest Brexit thread where it seemed more at home but then decided it needed a space of it's own.
I've been to bed slept for two hours and am now up for who knows how long.
Not pain related this time as I seem to be having a bit of remission.

Data Overtakes Oil as Leading (Geopolitical) Global Commodity

To sum up this rather chilling exposé, the article goes on to say that military psychological warfare systems along with government contracts and American billionaires managed to swing the small percentages required to get Donald Trump into Washington and Brexit to become a reality. The latter broke just about all electioneering rules ever written.

The propaganda machines able to achieve such enormous political change is truly seismic whichever way you look at it.

A good book to read on this is Platform Capitalism by Nick Srnicek (I managed to get a copy from the local library so you might be able to as well)

There is an interview here with him talking about the subject.

Its a great explanation for how the modern economy is developing - basically huge monopolies developing (Google, Uber, Amazon, Facebook, etc) who essentially out-right control large sections of the economy and profit by rent-seeking.

Google's dominance is such that even a massive corporation like Microsoft cant compete with them. They have resorted to paying people to use bing but it still isn't working because google's codebase is growing exponentially.

I read the article linked and wouldn't dismiss it entirely, but it seems like academic hand-waving to explain close election results that were sub-optimal for the broad church of the left.

The 'data mining' is just advertising and follows the zeitgeist. People vote.
