BURY ST EDMUNDS SHOPS ARE BUZZING !!!

Or rather, they aren't.

In fact, faced with some very tasty prices hikes in food and fuel, it seems that the Brexit squeeze is well and truly on and shoppers are voting with their feet.

The number of people out shopping in the UK in the first two weeks of December fell "significantly" compared to last year, retail researchers say.

Analysis firm Springboard found a 4.9% decrease in footfall at shopping centres, retail parks and high streets.

The figures come as a retail analyst said it expected shops to make big discounts in the week before Christmas.

Consultancy firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers said it was anticipating more retailers to be discounting in the week leading up to Christmas than during the Black Friday weekend.

The six weeks from the end of November to the start of January account for up to half of any major retailer's annual profits.

Have a bad Christmas, and you'll have a bad year.

Add in falling real incomes because inflation is high and wage growth is modest, and retailers are especially nervous this year.

Naturally all available excuses will be trotted out. Weather, whatever. Some will search endlessly for 'good' news to offset the likely cull of weaker retailers come January by falsely inflating buyer confidence. But reality is hitting people's wallets. And they aren't spending.

Same story the last half dozen Christmases.
Sales down footfall down look for bargains leading up to Xmas etc.
The internet is doing very well.
Crowded shopping centres and terrorism frighten people off.
Parking nightmares do too.
Shopping in weather and traffic is so out of date.
The last minute price slashing we were told would happen the last half dozen Christmases didn't materialize.

Lol. Canny read a book and learn about correlation you lightweight. Then ask what is causing reduced footfall in market towns? Online shopping or brexit.

Then look at like for like internet sales and see they are on the up.

No need to thank me i already have a warm glow.

For what it's worth, the shops and retail parks around here are absolutely heaving. Went to see my brother in Bexleyheath yesterday, took me 20 minutes just to get off at the A2 junction. And thats quite a modest shopping area really with Bluewater and Lakeside so close, which by the way you wouldn't catch me going anywhere near at this time of year.

For all the silly people putting this down to online shopping don't be so silly.

Online shopping tends to happen before 'Cyber Monday' as that is the last date after which delivery for Christmas cannot be guaranteed my many online retailers. It is then that the attention properly reverts back to the high street where - we are finding - sales are significantly down.

Still that's not really a surprise with falling wages, rising inflation and uncertainty in the job market.

A lot of shops discount stuff because they need it to be gone by Christmas, so they can be ready for the next year. They might have got in tons of Christmas stuff and they need the room for next year's stock.
