I was told this afternoon that sometimes you can purchase 2 tubes of toothpaste at a Poundshop.

People shouldn't get prescriptions for things which are available over the counter - that's just taking the piss out of the NHS.

People who are entitled to free prescriptions should get the medicines and medical supplies appropriate to their condition. It's what the system is for.

Not over-the-counter medications. They can buy them like everyone else. Like I said, this kind of thing is being stamped out, and not before time. The system is not there for people to abuse.

But they are on such a low income that they are unable to afford them, what part of that don't you understand, you extremely uncharitable and nasty peice of work :shake head:

Most people then.

It does seem to be most people.

It's mostly a free (at point of use) health service - that was the idea.

Well I pay for prescriptions. The criteria for getting free prescriptions surely doesn't cover the majority of people, and yet most people seem to get them for free.

Most people don't qualify for free prescriptions.

However, those who do are also those who use the system most, the elderly, the young and those with chronic, disabling conditions.

I have no objection to them getting MEDICINES free. However, it is certainly stretching a point to call things like toothpaste a medicine.

Not so - Colgate Duraphat for example - only available on prescription. Remember this is a Mail distortion we are discussing here - and one that is three years old.

Fair do's, can't say I've ever heard of Duraphat.

And I must learn not to take some people's posts at face value...

Of course, I can well imagine that Dacre et al have already got their names down for tranches of cut price NHS shares.

In Wales all prescriptions are free for everyone.
I can't see it being sustainable much longer.

They can't afford paracetamol? I guess you're one of the scroungers who doesn't pay.

I haven't complained about the cost. I'm saying that I pay so I don't know why others don't. There's always some excuse or another.

You don't need to pay more than £104 per annum - perhaps this will help:
