Theresa May was today warned by a top Tory she faces being ousted if she compromises any further on Brexit .

Plummy-voiced history buff Jacob Rees-Mogg made the threat in the most Jacob Rees-Mogg was possible - with a reference to the Corn Laws repeal of 1846.

It came as he slammed Mrs May for giving way on “every red line” in the transition period agreement between the UK and EU.

Mr Rees-Mogg, chair of the powerful group of Tory Brexiteers known as the European Research Group, cited concessions over UK fishing rights and free movement of people during the 21 month period as examples of where the Prime Minister had given in to Brussels.

He also branded Remainers "cave dwellers" and claimed those trying to stop Brexit would damage the UK’s psyche in a way not seen since the Suez crisis of 1956.
