Universal Credit causing a ‘hostile environment’

Universal Credit causing a ‘hostile environment’

Postby Guest » Wed May 23, 2018 7:07 pm

Hundreds of thousands of families in the UK are being pushed into misery and financial hardship as a result of the Government’s “hostile environment” towards benefit claimants, says the UK’s largest union Unite.

Unite is calling on the UK Government to halt the roll-out of its flagship Universal Credit scheme, before even more poor and vulnerable people are plunged further into poverty.

The union highlights recent research by the Economic and Social Research Council, which found that “benefit sanctions do little to enhance people’s motivation to prepare for, seek or enter paid work”, and “routinely trigger profoundly negative personal, financial, health and behavioural outcomes”.

According to Unite, the number of sanctions imposed against Universal Credit claimants is much higher than for other benefits – mainly due to problems in claiming the new benefit and missing job centre appointments because of not hearing about it in time.

Unite also claim that payment delays and housing support payments not being made directly to landlords is causing rent arrears and placing people at risk of eviction.

Figures also show a 50% increase in the number of people turning to food banks in areas where Universal Credit has been rolled-out.

Not paying rent directly to the landlord is not causing rent arrears and placing people at risk of eviction. It's people not paying their rent which does that. It's up to them to prioritise, and rent is a priority.

Unfortunately near enough that makes any difference. The only time I hear from Len McLusky and his cohorts is when they want me to vote for him and from 'partners' of Unite who want me to buy something from them.

The effectiveness of union representation was always patchy - much depends on how good your local branch and reps are.

Everyone is a Tory to you fucknuts aren't they?

Either that or a fascist or a Nazi.

You're a perfect example of the fall in education standards, due to the Tories of course not the Comprehensive system or dim Marxist teachers.

They're full of shit and traitors to their own members.

They support mass immigration which creates a huge labour pool which keeps wages down, makes union organising difficult and creates job instability.

They're tools of the neoliberals these days.

What do you suggest - no worker representation?

Like that's ever going to happen, his time has passed.

He's just a puppet anyway, only leader because he's a bit more palatable than the real power couple, McCluskey and McDonnell.

Not working as much as it did but they sell him as the kindly father figure (like they did with "Uncle Joe" Stalin).

But occasionally the real Corbyn comes out, the feral, rat-like, spite-filled terrorist supporter.

Actually representing the interests of the people who pay their subs to them maybe, instead of all this International Communist "workers of the world" crap.

Have you actually seen the magazines they send out? All about LGBT issues, identity politics, international socialism, 99% of their members must throw it straight in the recycling.

Like the party they fund they're totally out of touch with ordinary working-class people.
