With the handshake between the presidents of North and South Korea, Trump saw US influence in the area flying out of the window.

In the pre-summit negotiations he has clearly sent in his negotiators with a brief to ensure that the N Koreans lose face, by repeatedly comparing them with Libya.

Asians do not lose face lightly. The whole process was doomed before it really started.

I just finished watching a news report where Mike Pompeo was explaining how teams of delegates from the US and NK had been working together to organise the meeting and over the last week it's become apparent that all communication with NK has simply halted.

Course, I guess the yanks would say that but, in the absence of any information to contradict that explanation, it's all there is to go on.

Pyongyang has been further infuriated Washington’s comparing North Korea’s fate with that of Gaddafi-era Libya and continued joint military drills with South Korea.

To me this sounds like Pence’s statement and Bolton’s horrifying comparison with Libya was done on purpose, since the US wants to back out of the summit and the meeting – and pursue its belligerent course against Pyongyang – this also on Bolton’s advice to Trump. Bolton wants war. He was the one who basically instigated the war scenarios against Iraq.

Bolton does definitely not want peace, never wanted peace.

Will see what happens. But I also believe that the mid-June Singapore summit will not take place, or if it does, it probably won’t lead to anything that makes the two Koreas safer.

I believe the only good and sustainable thing is a peace agreement between the two Koreas, north and south – and that South Korea, as a sovereign nation, will ask the US for denuclearization of the Peninsula, to dismantle its military base, starting with the nuclear arsenal.

They started off refering to "the Libya model" in reference to how Libya agreed to halt it's nuclear weapons program in 2003 (?).
Trump then made a statement where he suggested "the Libya model" actually involved bombing the shit out of a country to assist with a coup that led to Gaddafi being found hiding in a sewer and having a large knife shoved up his arse in 2011.

I'm sure this did wonders for LRM's enthusiasm for embracing "the Libya model".

A few months ago Trump was calling Kim Jong-Un "little rocket man", then get's tetchy when NK foreign minister called Pence a "political dummy" after Pence had made his crass 'Libya model' statement. So it's only ok for the US to sling out insults, but not any other country.

Trumps speech was a laugh too..bragging about "our military which is THE MOST powerful anywhere in THE WORRRRRLD".

Washington Holds Gun to North Korea’s Head

The prospects for peace diplomacy between the US and North Korea took a sudden hit after President Donald Trump issued an extraordinary threat to Kim Jong Un. It was in effect a death threat.

Trump warned last week that if the North Korean leader does not comply with Washington’s demands for complete denuclearization, then Kim would “end up like Gaddafi”. Trump added that North Korea would be “decimated” if it did not give up its nuclear weapons.

Arguably, Trump’s rhetoric of violence towards another state is a violation of international law and the United Nations charter.

It was not the time first time the American president has engaged in criminal intimidation of the northeast Asian nation. Last September, he told the United Nations general assembly that North Korea would be “totally destroyed”.
