Paddies make sane decision.

Paddies make sane decision.

Seems they've voted to repeal anti-abortion laws by a significant majority.

I'm all for educating people about responsible birth-control and family planning but enforcing it by law is wrong IMO.
Impressed that the Paddies seem to have finally set aside a thousand years of catholic dogma and voted pragmatically.

Now that just leaves Northern Ireland as the lone archaic backwater in Europe.

Yay, someone made the thread!

I'm a bloke, why would I have a say over a woman's healthcare unless I'm a professional?

If you were the father, then you definitely have a right to a say.

To someone else's body?

I think not...

At what point does the unborn baby gain the same rights as any other born person?
At conception?
At birth?
Or at some point in between?

Yes - but it's likely to be 12 weeks in Ireland.

Good to see them finally reaching the 20th Century in this respect.

Should help reduce abortion tourism at least - and much anguish for Irish women.

Term limits are there for a reason, if a late term abortion is allowed then you're looking at a dead kid or something out of a horror movie that will live for 60 seconds after birth.

It always was and though i listened to both sides of the argument i was staggered when Rees-Mogg interviewed on tv said in so many words even if the baby is a result of rape, she must deliver it. Even if that involved incestuous rape. I recognise he's devout Roman Catholic and he's every right to his faith but on that point he got it all terribly wrong.

See that's what really winds me up.

By all means set up organisations which advocate your beliefs and try to persuade people to act in whatever way you think is appropriate if you really must.
Maybe some of those organisations would advocate proper planned parenthood and birth-control, maybe some could mediate between the prospective parents and I'm sure some would advocate medieval hellfire and brimstone for sinners too.

Just stop relying on "It's the law so suck it up".
Give people a choice and then use your words to try and convince people to act how you think they should.

I think a few 'pro-lifers' did make some valid points though were less radical. I still remember when it was illegal in UK and back street abortions were going on, some of which had horrendous consequences, but it wasn't until 1967 when that was stopped.

It was the right decision yesterday and hopefully by the end of the year, hundreds of Irish women will no longer have to travel to the British Mainland each year for terminations.

I disagree
If the decision is NOT to have an abortion, then the father takes on a lifelong responsibility
It takes 2 to make a baby.
Any life/death decision like this should also involve the father I believe.
