Spain's prime minister has been forced out of his job, losing a no-confidence vote triggered by a corruption scandal.

Right-winger Mariano Rajoy was dramatically toppled today and replaced by socialist Pedro Sanchez.

Rajoy was forced out after seven years in power following a wave of financial scandals involving his Popular Party.

He announced his departure ahead of a vote of confidence in the Spanish Parliament.

The motion, called by Sanchez, won 180 votes for, 169 against and 1 abstention.

"Years of scandals, trials and convictions which have seen swathes of Rajoy’s right-wing chums sent to prison for corruption"

Last week the party’s treasurer Luis Barcenas was given a 33-year jail sentence after he was convicted of money laundering, tax crimes and receiving bribes.

Francisco Correa (also known as “Don Vito” – yes, as in The Godfather), the businessman who was at the helm of the spiders’ web of criminal activity which has engulfed Spain for the best part of a decade, was sentenced to 51 years.

Good riddance.

Not a complete fan of Sanchez though.

He sounds a bit like the Lib Dems who cuddled up to Cameron - power hungry. Time will tell.

"Spain elects system of government which has always been proven not to work"

Each to their own. Glad we at least learn from mistakes.

Do we? If so, why did 15 million vote for neo-liberalism when neo-liberalism ruined the economy in 2008? :gigglesnshit:

Congratulations to Pedro Sánchez of PSOE on becoming Prime Minister of Spain.

We look forward to a socialist government leading progressive forces in Spain to reconnect with the grassroots, reduce inequality and support the victims of austerity.

The Labour Party will work with you against austerity and for real change in Europe.

Jeremy Corbyn

At least it won't be based on greed, social destruction and division - you know, the Tory model.

But it will be based on austerity

"After being sworn in, Sánchez announced that he would only propose measures that had considerable parliamentary support, and reaffirmed the government's compliance with the EU deficit requirements.[36]"

You know - living within your means.

In fact the EU policy on debt is here:

"According to the European Union’s Maastricht criteria, EU member states may not have a budget deficit that exceeds three percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or a national debt that exceeds of sixty percent of the GDP."

https://www.europeaninstitute.org/index ... -in-the-eu

"Debt reached 98.3% of GDP in Spain, while the prior quarter, third quarter of 2017, it was at 98.5%."
https://countryeconomy.com/national-debt/spain

See the difference is that Spain's new PM has a Doctorate in Economics
That's why he's promoting economic responsibility
Whereas Corbyn only scraped through 2 A-levels.
