for the Guardian

Jonathan Aitken, the former Conservative cabinet minister who served a prison sentence for perjury, is to be ordained and plans to work as an unpaid prison chaplain.

Aitken became a Christian while serving a prison sentence for perjury in 1999 after lying on oath in a libel case against the Guardian.

Now he is to be ordained as a deacon later this month at St Paul’s cathedral by the new bishop of London, Sarah Mullally.

“I am having a slight struggle tempering my enthusiasm with proper Christian humility,” he told the Sunday Times.

:pmsl: :pmsl: :pmsl: :pmsl: Portillo's fuckin Aitken...Portillo's fuckin Aitken....la..la...la..la...la..la..la..la!!!!

That's a chant that was quite widespread at the time in certain political circles!

I suspect he's genuine.
Many in jail find God .... it helps get parole if you can do it and keep a straight face.
This guy all these years later and in his mid 70's will find no money and no glory in it.
So yes I think he's genuine.

Slightly off topic - in my days at RAF Cranwell, the section I worked in contained a certain Junior Technician by the name of Deacon.

I shall always remember the phone ringing while we were out doing some work on a bit of NavAid kit and him answering.....
