U.S. Plans to Withdraw From UN Human Rights Council Today

Postby Fletch » Tue Jun 19, 2018 8:28 pm

The Trump administration plans to announce its withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday, making good on a pledge to leave a body it has long accused of hypocrisy and criticized as biased against Israel, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley will discuss the withdrawal at the State Department in Washington at 5 p.m., the people said. They asked not to be identified previewing a decision that hadn’t yet been made public.

The 47-member council, created in 2006 and based in Geneva, began its latest session on Monday with a broadside against President Donald Trump’s immigration policy by the UN’s high commissioner for human rights. He called the policy of separating children from parents crossing the southern border illegally “unconscionable.”

Rather than start acting in a humane and legal way, they walk away from the body put in place to fight such behaviour.

It's absolutely disgusting and the Trump supporters on here should hang their heads on deep collective shame. DEEP SHAME.

Caging Children, Separating Families: Has the War on Immigration Gone Too Far?

“Never has our future been more unpredictable, never have we depended so much on political forces that cannot be trusted to follow the rules of common sense and self-interest—forces that look like sheer insanity, if judged by the standards of other centuries.” ― Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

Sometimes you have to draw a line in the sand.

This is one of those moments.

There are some acts so wrong-headed, so immoral, and so inhumane that they simply cannot be defended on any grounds.

Be warned: the White House’s new “zero tolerance policy” for separating undocumented parents from their children at the border as a way of discouraging illegal immigration is pushing us into dangerous territory morally and otherwise.

Dragging young children kicking and crying and screaming from their parents, separating those children from their parents indefinitely, locking those children up in cages (“dog kennels”) like animals, and subjecting them to the predators of the American police state: these are acts that no decent people should tolerate from their government.

In McAllen, Texas, undocumented migrant children are being held in cages made out of wire and net. These children are sleeping on concrete floors with thin foil “space blankets” for a mattress.

In Brownsville, Texas, reportedly more than 1,000 children who have been separated from their parents are being held in a former Walmart facility with blacked-out windows that has been transformed into a detention center and is being run by a government contractor.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal got a chance to speak briefly with some of the migrant women being held at a federal detention facility near Seattle who had been forcibly separated from their children. Jayapal recounts:

Thirty to 40 percent of these women came with children who had been forcibly taken away from them. None got a chance to say goodbye to their children—they were forcibly taken away. One said she was deceived, because they were in detention together. Then the CBP officers told her she was going out to get her photograph taken. When she came back, she was put in a different room, and she never got to see the child again. Some of them said they could hear their children screaming for them in the next room. The children ranged anywhere from one to teenagers.

Bear in mind, there is no bedtime story for these children.

There are no parents nearby to protect them from the things that go bump in the night.

There is no assurance that they will ever be reunited with their parents again.

You who are reading this, hold tight to your own children. They won’t be yours for long if the government is allowed to prevail in its view that children of undocumented “criminals” automatically become wards of the state.

The government’s rationale goes like this:...

The defence is even worse;

Huckabee-Sanders Defends Ripping Children From Parents, Because It's "Very Biblical to Enforce the Law"

Asked to comment on remarks made by Attorney General Jeff Sessions earlier in the day about how the Trump administration's policy of ripping children out of the arms of their immigrant parents is somehow justified by the Christian Bible, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Thursday afternoon said she could not respond specifically to the AG's claims but said "it is very biblical to enforce the law."

"That is actually repeated a number of times throughout the Bible," Huckabee Sanders said in response to the question by CNN's Jim Acosta as she appeared to glance at notes on her podium.

"Where does it say in the Bible that it's moral to take children away from their mothers?" asked Acosta.

But Huckabee wasn't interested in answering that question, however, and accused Acosta of trying to put words into her mouth and talking over her. "I know it's hard for you to understand," she said to the reporter, "even short sentences, I guess."

Does the uk separate children from parents when they are locked up in prison?
They are illegal immigrants trying to cross a countries borders to stay there ilegally. If an American were to cross into Mexico illegally they would imprisoned, and rightly so.
When the parents are arrested for illegal entry into the country would you rather that the kids are just left to fend for themselves at the border? Or given food and shelter?
Now you have to ask why the parents bring the kids to enter the country illegally in the first place.
Trump has said all along that he will protect America's borders. Illegal Immigration is now at serious levels in America and needs to be halted. Why contact your local politician and ask them to pass a bill that you will take any south American children
and ever their parents that America refuses entry to.
We won't mention the concentration camps. We all know who's idea that was to begin with right?

UN ran a child sex ring in Haiti for 10 years, they're hardly perfect.

I rather suspect that the UN didn't run a child sex ring in Haiti for 10 years, but that a number of people working for the UN certainly did.

Seperating kids from their parents is a dumb idea, exasperated by Congress not fixing laws or writing new ones that could easily fix this. The Dems have found something to beat Trump over the head with, and they are not going to budge on this political gift this close to an election.

As for the UN, it's a corrupt useless entity and the Human Rights Council is a joke. But I'm sure it can function just fine with one less member. It still has Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and China to spread human rights around the world.

It is a joke - but by leaving it America is now viewed as a bigger one - and a bigger threat to human rights, the promotion of which it once boasted as a raison d'etre.

A number alright, about 100.

Did the same in Bosnia and other places as well.
