Rail services on the East Coast Main Line are back under government control, following the failure of the franchise.

Stagecoach and Virgin Trains, which had a 90% and 10% stake in the venture respectively, handed over control on Sunday after running it since 2015.

:yess: Now watch it flourish and make sure it's kept under public control!

It's not truly under public control. It is being run by an operator of last resort.

Transport Secretary pays £2.3million for advice on how to run East Coast Main Line

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling splurged £2.3million on private consultants to tell him how to run the new publicly owned rail service.

Documents seen by the Mirror reveal Arup Group, in partnership with Ernst & Young, and SNC-Lavalin earned thousands over the past six months as the East Coast Main Line franchise hit the buffers.

The Department for Transport used exemption clauses under Freedom of Information laws to withhold details about the advice.

The line, failed by Virgin Trains East Coast, was back under Government control today and is now rebranded under the London North Eastern Railway name used until the 1940s.

The DfT will run it until a new public-private partnership can be appointed in 2020.

Cat Hobbs of We Own It, which made the FoI request, said: “We’re very happy the East Coast line is no longer in the hands of Stagecoach and Virgin but this is not nationalisation.

“It’s a scandal the public is forking out this much because Grayling doesn’t trust his own department to run a railway.

Are there passenger rail lines in the UK that actually cover operating costs with revenues?

Don't think there are any here.

Thats Jack's socialist 'solution'..taxpayer money--a never ending flow of it to pay for govt inefficiency.-Yes the rail lines in the UK,according to Jack, cover operating costs. With UK taxpayer money..
And Jack is fine with that as long as he's not bearing the brunt of it.

While you're here Tom I think you might like this.
It just gets better until the end it's quite incredible.
This will become part of Mccartneys legacy.

How sad that there are still those whose right wing dogma means they know the cost of everything, and the value of nothing.

A well run, efficient railway represents huge value to the GDP of any country - far more than the costs of subsidy.

And if you want examples, try Germany, Japan, in fact most of Europe.

Getting your workers to work on time and freight to where it needs to be (and keeping it off crowded roads) counts for a lot. And keeping prices affordable counts for a lot more. Those advantages certainly outweigh subsidies.

So you’re happy to kick in extra taxes out of your pay packet so that rail users can pay lower fares?

The fares can stay the same until the obvious efficiencies kick in (less backroom staff, better single ticketing, for instance), allowing subsidies to be reduced, and inflation will effectively reduce fares in time.

No need for extra taxes either - as franchises are not renewed, the country simply takes back control.

Your version of 'Project Fear' won't work on this one.
