So who were the gay guys, and who was mocking them?

It is all a bit of a muddle, as per all drunken bar brawls I have witnessed. They seem to start for nothing/perceived slights, people taking the piss out of one another and then commencing shoving.

The doorman said Stokes took the piss out of 2 gay guys and mimicked their speech and actions and 2 other guys became involved and he allegedly knocked them both out.


We will have to wait and see

I thought Stokes said that the guys were mocking his gay friends. Oh well, I really can't follow this story.

The England cricketer Ben Stokes has been cleared of affray after a fight outside a Bristol nightclub.

Following almost two and a half hours of deliberation, a jury of six men and six women at Bristol crown court acquitted the Durham all-rounder after he gave evidence saying he had acted in self-defence.

Stokes was on trial alongside Ryan Ali, 28, whom he was alleged to have punched unconscious in the brawl near Mbargo nightclub in the early hours of 25 September last year. Ali was cleared of the same charge.

A third man, Ryan Hale, 27, was acquitted of the charge last Thursday on the directions of the judge, Peter Blair QC.

They won't overrule a court verdict, clearly, but there might be a minor charge along the lines of bringing the game into disrepute.

And I was wondering why we hadn't heard evidence from 2 key witnesses...

"Kai Barry and William O’Connor, the couple Ben Stokes said he had been defending in a fight outside a Bristol nightclub, may have been at the heart of the trial , but they were visibly absent from the witness box and no statements were read from them.

Jurors were not told why the men were not called, with the judge, Peter Blair QC, saying only that it would be wrong for them to speculate about any witnesses the prosecution or defence did not call.

A spokeswoman for the Crown Prosecution Service said: “The evidence of Mr O’Connor and Mr Barry was disclosed to the defence but it was not deemed necessary to call them as witnesses in the case.

The main thrust of Stokes’ defence was that he was protecting the couple from homophobic abuse."
