The problems are this. The fire is in the mendocino natl forest---where there are only tiny roads for access--half of them dirt. The fire has to be fought 90% by air. There just arent enough resources to devote to a basically wilderness fire---altho small towns have been affected.--Also poor mgtmt policies have been in effect where they havent been cutting back the dead brush properly.
Its been like living in a big 3rd world city as far as air quality goes.Makes u feel bad for the people of india, china, indonesia etc who have to live in this crap 24/7.It definitely affects your health.
Occasionally we get a wind shift and the aqi(air qualoty index) improves-so people try to sneak in a walk or other outdoor activity at these times. The aqi is decent this am so im gonna go walk.

Ive been in CA for almost 35 yrs--and altho we always have fires--this fire is unique because its positioning etc makes it almost impossible to fight on a big scale/.Seems like it may just keep growing and growing--as the mendocino natl forest extends hundreds of miles straight north thru central valley of california. This is getting ridiculous. A 2 month fire???????????? could be.

That is how the forest clears dead brush. Fires should be left to burn. Where there is safety concerns the communities, in stead of running crying after something could be done. 100 people creating fire breaks at town or city boundries, one person working ten meaters at a time and gardeners with chainsaw would easily create a fire break a kilometer long 100 meaters wide in less than a week. What is the population of CA? Homeles in LA are currently 50-60k. All the tech in the world and people power still can't be beat. So fn bored of the same old war against nature. You can't win! Time to put childish notions to rest :again?: :dunno:

i mostly agree with your sentiments...but its not so simple. WE--humans in control of the environmental policies--managed the forests into this problem. this is no longer natural growth in the forest. once we did that then it is now a requirement to clear underbrush.
forest fires of course naturally occur---but when fires start now it is no longer such a natural occurance. We set it up so that the fires--when letting them burn--wlll destroy more of the forest than naturally occurs.
in other words stupid environmental policies messed up the whole natural system. In theory yes u r correct we should let them burn out.

For some interesting reading look up some of the writings of the late Dr Bill Wattenberg. He grew up in the CA mountains--and explains things very well.
