Surely a united Ireland would mean that N. Ireland (as was) would become part of Eire, in the EU, and no longer part of the UK ?

A move I entirely approve of.

Northern Ireland are net beneficiaries from the UK Treasury by £9billion per annum
Presumably the southern Irish are happy to pick up the tab?
And what about the divorce bill?
How big will that be, and will Dublin pay it?

We can all see what a mess Brexit it.
Don't think that NI leaving the UK then joining Eire will be any easier.

I suspect it would be similar in many ways to the re-unification of Germany.

Overall, a joyous occasion.

For many I'm sure it would be.
But East Germany and West Germany were 2 independent states
That is not the case with Northern Ireland
There could be a hefty divorce bill - just like Brexit
And Northern Ireland is dependendant on the rest of us to the tune of £9billion/year.
Someone has to pick up that tab as well.

They are still shooting and bombing each other in Belfast without a border , to reinstate a new border would hardly be a joyous occasion .

Reunification isn't reinstating a new border, it's tearing down an old one which probably shouldn't have been there in the first place.

By all means the ROI should join Ulster and the whole island be part of Britain again. How wonderful would that be, no more borders, no more troubles, a prosperous country as part of the UK.

The South is full of a mixture of all types of peoples that get on just fine.

They aren't very religious though! :awesome:

Just like they do in almost all sensible Western democracies, where religion gas become a secondary consideration confined mostly to the elderly and insecure.

Throw all the Nor'n Ir'n proddies into that mix and tell them they are to be ruled directly from Dublin and watch the fireworks.

Their country will be Ireland.

And sometimes, people can be persuaded to see the bigger picture. There are a lot more people who prefer peace to violence, even there.

You clearly didn't spend much time patrolling the streets over there if you hold such a simplistic view. I wish you were right on this, I really do, but personal experience suggests you are way off the mark.
It is a sad fact of life that 1690 is too well ingrained into the memories of both communities and they are still educated in their different schools from knee high to despise one another.
That needs to stop before progress can be made.
Getting rid of the Ulster Constabulary and forming the PSNI was a major step in the right direction and all we can do is hope that matters improve year on year going forward.

You clearly haven't been up close and personal and seen the sheer hatred in their eyes of how they can tell just by looking at each other that they are of the "other religion."
And you clearly have zero concept or first hand experience of that boiling over into violence on certain anniversaries.
Think of Millwall V West Ham, and then throw in guns and explosives and you will start to understand.
It is a lovely land and the people are really nice, apart from being nice to each other.
