McDonald’s, TGI Fridays and JD Wetherspoon workers to Strike

McDonald’s, TGI Fridays and JD Wetherspoon workers to Strike

FAST-FOOD workers are to make history by staging co-ordinated strike action at three of Britain's biggest hospitality chains – McDonald’s, TGI Fridays and pub group JD Wetherspoon.

The strikes will be among stoppages by fast-food workers worldwide, and the strikers will be joined by delegations of fast-food workers from four continents.

The strike takes place on October 4, and the workers will stage a rally in London’s Leicester Square to demand a £10 an hour minimum wage, union recognition and secure contracts.

:canny: We need more of this so that this wretched government is brought to it's knees and then kicked some more.

Ubereats drivers have been protesting this week over cuts to pay

“Some of us are facing a cut from £4.60 a drop to £2.80, which is totally unacceptable.

:shake head:

Between 100 and 300 couriers took part in Thursday’s demonstration, with many planning to return for a third day of protests on Friday.

A couple of successes this week

Two UVW members have won their case for unfair dismissal over union activities:

https://www.facebook.com/uvwunion/photo ... =3&theater

Philip Green's cleaning contractor at Topshop, Britannia Services Group, has admitted today in open court to having sacked UVW members Carolina and Susana (The Topshop Two) for their roles in organising the campaign for a living wage in 2016!

In a remarkable turn of events today Britannia conceded both ordinary and automatic unfair dismissal before Carolina's hearing even commenced and confessed that the reason they sacked her was because she was a member of UVW, participated UVW's activities, and made use of UVW's trade union services.

Britannia have stubbornly not conceded the same in Susana's case which took place over a 5 day hearing which ended today. However, it was shown beyond doubt on the evidence and under cross examination what we have always contended that she was dismissed in breach of her trade union and human rights for having recruited her colleagues into UVW and organised them to fight for a living wage.

The evidence also showed that Topshop was fully aware of and even called for Susan's sacking. In other words one of the biggest retailers owned by one of the richest men in Britain stamped over the trade union and human rights of their lowest paid workers for having dared to ask to be paid a living wage.

I think the firms mentioned are more to blame than the government and I am rather hoping workers from other firms that get treated like crap join in on this.

The Gig economy/Platform capitalism relies on low pay and poor conditions. As always workers will only tolerate this for so long before taking action (and more miltant ones at that).

For those that say immigrants drive down wages

Research is also necessary on the specifics of migration and food platform struggle. In the UK, migrant moped riders have been at the forefront of the largest strikes in London, Bristol and Brighton. Similarly to the Italian logistics sector, migrants forced into low waged, insecure work have taken the lead in the struggle

See also: migrants cleaners across London taking the lead and winning a real living wage (not the fake one introduced by the Tories)

The Anti-Immigrant Daily Mail Just Had to Give Its Migrant Cleaners a Pay Rise

But they insist it's nothing to do with trade unions.

https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/ne9e ... a-pay-rise

UVW has been claiming a victory, because the cleaners – who are nearly all from the Caribbean, Africa and Latin America – will now be paid the London Living Wage. According to the UVW, they had been working for the minimum wage of £7.50 per hour, but will now be paid £10.20 per hour, an increase of about £5,000 per year for a full-time worker.

The Gig economy doesn't rely on low wages, but because it's driven by a workers productivity, it will pay the low producers a much smaller wage. good prodecers are paid well based on the skills needed for the job. It's not for everyone. I've seen people do pretty damn good in it, and it's an excellent part time job for people that don't want an 8 hour day. It's also pretty good for retirees who don't want to sit around the house all day and would like to make a little money on the side.

I have no doubt the government will find a way to fuck it up like they do everything that actually works.

What the government will do is pass watered down, ineffective, reforms hoping to placate the workers enough to stop them taking actions like strikes/protests. The wind will have been taken out of the sails of the workers movement and the government will champion itself as looking out for the interests of the people.

Same thing happened with the living wage - grassroots movement across the country aiming to force/pressurise businesses to pay a decent wage (the living wage). The government responded by renaming the minimum wage the 'Living wage' (even though it was below the level being sort after by the movement) and then championing themselves as being pro-worker.

And it will take away choices and use force. It's what government does under the guise of helping people.

That policy was started in Germany during the early 1930s whilst Socialist leaders were being executed.
