Fracking to start in Lancashire as legal challenge fails

Fracking for shale gas can go ahead for the first time in the UK since it was linked with earthquakes in 2011.

Energy firm Cuadrilla has drilled two wells at its site in Lancashire after being given the go-ahead to extract shale gas by the government in 2016.

Campaigner Bob Dennett tried to prevent work starting, arguing in the High Court Lancashire County Council failed to properly assess any safety risks.

But Mr Justice Supperstone said there was "no evidence" to support the claim.

Cuadrilla chief executive Francis Egan said he was "delighted" and fracking would start on Saturday.

The Preston New Road site has been the scene of repeated protests from environmentalists who object to hydraulic fracturing and its potential impact on the environment.

The process sees liquid pumped at high pressure deep underground to fracture rock and release gas.

Work at Cuadrilla's Preese Hall site near Blackpool was suspended in 2011 after it was linked with two earth tremors.

Mr Dennett had applied for an interim injunction preventing Cuadrilla from fracking the UK's first horizontal shale gas well

I recall this business being a topic of great debate on this forum years back, and how many believed earth tremors could be caused and the water table could be polluted.

Any thoughts?

Luckily there's pending EU regulations coming in which will better regulate the industry.

Oh, wait...

Regulating or abolishing?

cause at this stage in the 'planet being fucked royally by carbon emissions' saga ZERO fracking is the only sensible option.

Gas is far cleaner to burn than oil and coal. And it doesn't create 3 headed foxes like nuclear power.

It seems fairly obvious that May and the Gang expect a large "Fraxit Bonus" from cheaper energy.

Very possible, but we won't see it - as usual any financial benefit will be hived off into her mate's pockets.

Who owns the gas under someone's property?

The Crown .
There is a law enabling fracking on ones property . The law of Trespass onto ones property for fracking does not stand .

So there are no mineral rights for land owners?

See here, they have to pay the land owners for the gas under the property, even though the well site could be a half mile away, thanks to diagonal and horizontal dwelling. Because fracking is so successful, gas doesn't pay much. It's not hardly worth drilling for, but 10 years ago, it was pumping quite a bit of money into the pockets of land owners and local economies.

Oh, and landowners can keep well sites off their property, if they don't want them. It happens now and then, not oftrn as most.take the money and run.

Texans love oil and gas, but they love property rights even more.
