UN Slams Tory Austerity

UK austerity has inflicted 'great misery' on citizens, UN says

The UK government has inflicted “great misery” on its people with “punitive, mean-spirited, and often callous” austerity policies driven by a political desire to undertake social re-engineering rather than economic necessity, the United Nations poverty envoy has found.

But as Hammond says, "Austerity is at an end" so that's nice.

Yes, let's not.

And Stooo, please do not utter the phrase "country before party" - it doesn't fly well in this context.

Yeah hearing that 'in the national interest' crap makes you wonder what kind of nation has an interest in hounding sick and disabled people into early graves (while simultaneously cutting taxes on the wealthy/corporations).

And the fact that the Lib Dems were dominated by the neo-liberal orange book crowd who advocated this kind of ideological project long before the economic recession shows it was ideological driven to begin with.

The Useless Nations? Why would anyone care what a corrupt organization says about how a country manages it's finances when it can't manage it's own?

That's the point, it want about managing finances as these vicious (in some cases murderous) policies often ending up costing more that they were supposed to save.

Bit like when Florida tried drug testing welfare recipients (in order to strip them of welfare) and the project cost more than it was supposed to save

Yeah, maybe Florida can try to rival the UN for corruption and stupidity.

Channel 4 news covered this the other evening and must admit i found it distressing to watch and listen to accounts of those affected. I still do. It's utterly disgraceful and shameful for the worlds fifth wealthiest country and begs the question, where is the money and how is it being used? UK wealth gap has grown to a chasm between rich and poor and the recent budget worsened it as this government continually takes from the poor to 'feed' the rich.

Panorama also did a very good documentary on the Universal Credit crisis which has caused untold misery to many. One man got sanctioned because he can't use a computer and needs help from someone who can. In danger of being sanctioned again, turned up for an appointment only to be told the person he needed to see had 'gone on holiday', so they sanction him again! Totally mad.

Considering the source, I would be skeptical. Unless your policy is to believe all sources that confirm your bias.

Don't disagree but the UN were still right to call out austerity for what it is: "a political desire to undertake social re-engineering rather than economic necessity."

The article on Florida supports this: when challenged that the drug testing policy was costing taxpayers money, and was causing more harm than good, the supporters of the law dismissed it as the real agenda was to try and punish people for taking drugs.

The worse thing about Brexit is it's taking the attention from really important developments like this. Austerity has literally killed British citizens.

We live here Maddog, we're seeing the effects and (God Forbid) some will be experiencing them. The UN is only reiterating what many of us have been trying to draw attention to for years.
