Dark in Sark

Dark in Sark

Postby Grafenwalder » Fri Nov 30, 2018 2:13 am

This year more than ever i've noticed a serious increase in daily gas/electric costs. However, spare a thought for Sark islanders who may be left with no power at all after an independent commissioner ruled islanders were paying too much for power and ordered Sark Electricity to lower its tariff to 52p/kWh. UK average tariff is about 14p/kWh.

Sark Electricity owner has said he cannot afford to lower the rate so will switch the supply off tonight at midnight! :yikes:

Ouch. Perhaps a peat fire and a small wind turbine each is the order of the day...

The Islanders still have to pay for the diesel to be shipped in for the generators

I believe Sark Electricity do also which seems to be part of the complaint. Maybe the islanders have found an alternative and lower cost source. It just seems extremely odd to me that Sark Electricity has been a family owned and run business for decades with zero competition and as residents there appear to be quite wealthy, SE have no doubt been coining it in for some time and seeing their 'gravy train' hitting the buffers wasn't what they expected. I'm surprised the islanders haven't complained before but when money is no problem it's easy to become complacent.

Five hours to lights out!

I've been to Sark.

They run tractors there so diesel is already shipped in for that and other farm machinery.

It is. Bicycle hire shop does good business too. You have to have permission to have and operate a tractor. Think it's land owners/farmers or essential duties to have one. Had a tour in a horse drawn carriage when I was there and told us a bit of the history and local customs. The police station is not manned and only has a small 1 man cell in case of trouble.

I expect the crime rate is virtually zero as a thief isn't going very far anyway! Doubt any residents bother locking their house either.
