Stop Making Fun of Alexandria Ocasia-Cortez!

Love her or hate her, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gets it. What is “it”, you might ask? I’ll get there in a second.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shot to national fame after she won her Democratic primary against incumbent congressman (and Democratic Caucus Chair) Joe Crowley in June of 2018. Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described “democratic socialist”, was a fervent supporter of Bernie Sanders during the 2016 Democratic primary and ran her campaign much in the same fashion as the aforementioned grandpa of democratic socialists.

Ocasio-Cortez spent only $194,000 versus her opponent’s war chest of $3.4 million, yet defeated the 10-term incumbent by nearly 15% in the vote (57.13% to 42.5%). Many within the Democratic Party establishment were at a loss for words at Ocasio-Cortez’s humbling victory over the safe, moderate party leader in Crowley. They couldn’t comprehend that through grassroots alone, Ocasio-Cortez was able to build a coalition of supporters from many different groups, ranging from Black Lives Matter, MoveOn, Democracy for America, and more to defeat an established elected official like Crowley.

Foolishly, many within the greater Republican/conservative/libertarian camps are falling into the same trap that those establishment Democrats did back in June. Ocasio-Cortez has been a “gaffe machine” during her media sprints, as she ignorantly claimed that there were “three chambers of government; the presidency, the Senate, and the House” (the three branches of government are the executive, legislative, and judicial branches) and insisted that once she was “inaugurated” in January, that Congress was going to sign a bunch of progressive laws (members of Congress are sworn in, not inaugurated, and Congress writes the laws, but does not sign them into law).

While it’s tempting (and honestly, easy) to make fun of Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, I plead with you; don’t. Your picking on her is a part of her plan.

Ocasio-Cortez was able to win he primary (and ultimately, win her seat) because she was able to appeal to the average, progressive voter within her district who was your normal, everyday, and generally politically apathetic voter. Those involved in politics on a daily basis, be it professionally or as a hobby, aren’t “normal” when compared to their neighbors. The average person doesn’t think about tax policy, Supreme Court rulings, or the national debt. What they do think about is their health, their families health, their income, their home, and their immediate community.

See, that’s what Ocasio-Cortez figured out. As I hinted at earlier, she gets “it”. The “it” is appealing to the those basic needs of those people who will be casting their votes. The average voter doesn’t want to hear about some brilliant tax policy… no, what they want to hear is that their kids are going to be taken care of if they get hurt in a car accident. And when their politician makes a mistake, like wrongfully stating that the three chambers of government are the presidency, Senate, and the House, the voters don’t care. Why? Because they can easily see themselves making the same mistake. They see themselves in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

There seems to be a increase in this type of thinking. I wonder if it's social media which allows people like her and Trump to circumvent the filters of the media and speak directly to "their" people.

There was a time when ignorant statements doomed politicians. Now it almost makes them more endearing to many of their followers. :dunno:

She's a socialist.

But that's not the point of the article.

A very good article that tries to limit itself to one side of the problem.

Trump, Brexit and Ocasio-Cortez don't naturally fall into traditional left-right political dynamic because they are populists, whatever their political ideology, and however sincerely they hold to it, they see simple solutions to problems and as often as not those simple solutions will be ineffective at best.

The easiest example is Trump's border wall. Anyone who bothers to look can tell you that most illegals do not walk or drive in across the Mexican border they fly in. They will also tell you that the number who climb fences, tunnel or swim across the river is both vanishingly small and unlikely to be affected by a wall as there will have to be legitimate crossing points where they can easily use distractions and subterfuges to get through. They will point you to the permanently manned and militarised border around Gaza and point out that men and material are able to penetrate that with some regularity if not necessarily ease and the US would neither be capable nor inclined to apply that level of security along the southern border and finally, even if all that wasn't true, a determined illegal could just get a flight from Mexico to Canada and stroll across the Northern border completely unchallenged

None of the above so much as phases those who are determined to think the immigration system can be fixed with bricks and mortar and are willing to spend $25 billion on something that has no prospect of working

I just laughed out loud when a Fox News commentator said this might violate the code of conduct because it's illegal to threaten to use official power against an individual for partisan purposes.

Hmmm

I was comparing her to Trump. Supporters of both are not concerned with accuracy or knowledge.

This is something that "centrists" do in the UK a lot...

Compare socialists to supporters of the far right, as if Nazi salutes & racially abusing people on trains is the same as campaigning to protect the NHS & our workers rights.

Little sneaks that they are!

Many many moons ago now, I was sat at a bar in Queens NY, Stood beside me was a drunk older man who was being a bit of a Nuisance. He was a bit loud and stumbling around, He had a young guy with him who turned out to be his cousin from Ireland.
Anyway the barman told me he was Joe Cowley a big shot in the democratic party. His cousin was asking him questions about Hillary Clinton, as her and Bill had just moved to New York so she could be run for the senate seat. They had both stayed in Crowley's place while looking for a house of their own.
The cousin asked Crowley what was Hillary like. And good old drunk Joe replied ' she is a cunt, a cunt of the highest order'
He was upset because she had offered him the world while she was staying at his house. But soon dropped him when they moved upstate.
