Jeremy Corbyn has told an audience of European socialists that EU support for austerity has caused hardship for ordinary people, and that unless something changes there is a risk that “the fake populists of the far right will fill the vacuum”.

Speaking at the Congress of European Socialists in Lisbon, the Labour leader also said his party respected the result of the Brexit referendum and it was the duty of the left in the UK to “shape what comes next”.

Corbyn argued that Labour would be internationalist whether the UK was inside or outside the EU, and promised that the party would “work together to help build a real social Europe” by protecting workers’ and consumers’ rights.

He said: “EU support for austerity and failed neoliberal policies have caused serious hardship for working people across Europe.” It had “damaged the credibility of European social democratic parties and played a significant role in the vote for Brexit”.

However, he promised that under his leadership Labour would take a different approach, and he added a stark warning: “If the European political establishment carries on with business as usual, the fake populists of the far right will fill the vacuum. European socialists have to fight for a different kind of Europe.”

Corbyn is well known for his gammon views, he’s voted against the E.U. consistently and that will not change.
He wants to copy the Venezuelan model.

I think that the majority would agree with his views on austerity. It's a political choice and people have had enough. Time for the rich to feel the brunt of it for a generation or more.

What chance of that when they’ll just send all their money abroad and evade taxes? Please explain how Corbyn will solve that?

The rich don't feel the brunt of anything, that's the point of being rich. Well, that and fixing elections, bankrolling governments and the like.

What's the difference between an arch leaver and regular leaver? :dunno:

A Leaver has only had one opportunity to vote against the E.U. and the arch leaver has voted against the E.U. consistently on a vast amount of occasions.
And yet remainers think him their salvation and their biggest chance of remaining.
If all pro-immigration Americans were backing Trump we’d think them insane and call them typical thick Americans.
What does that make us?

We all know he has a solid, unwavering record of voting against all things EU.

Something I've said all along but too many people have their heads in the sand to actually notice.

40 years of it and where are we? Where are France, Spain, Italy, Greece? They are all looking at a rich few and the impoverished many. Looking at wealth gaps never seen before. Even those who on the face of it are doing ok have massive debts behind the veneer of respectability. One sickness, job loss or unexpected bill is all it takes for the lot to come crashing down. Everything relies on making that monthly payment. Many of them.

Record homelessness, record food bank use, record levels of debt, record housing costs, persecution of the sick and disabled, record debts in NHS trusts, poor or non existent public services, crime out of control, youngsters landed with circa £50,000 levels of debt just to get the chance of an interview.

Yeah, more of that, eh...
