Trump: It’s Time For U.S. To Recognize Israel’s Sovereignty Over Golan Heights

President Donald Trump said on March 21 that it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

“After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability,” Trump said on Twitter.

Israel occupied the Golan Heights by force during the 1967 war. The U.N. recognizes the region as a Syrian territory occupied by Israel. In 1981, the U.N. Security Council rejected an Israeli law meant to annex Golan and described the law in resolution 497 as “null and void.”

Despite the clear status of the Golan Heights, several senior U.S. officials, including Senator Lindsey Graham, jumped to supports Trump’s decision to gift the Syrian region to Israel.

On March 25, US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. The area was seized from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War.

In a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump hailed the “powerful” relationships between the US and Israel. The Israeli Prime Minister called the signing “historic justice” and a “diplomatic victory.”

The NEA prohibits the transfer of US technology to another country if there’s a risk it can be used to develop nukes. The NEA’s Section 123 states that nuclear technology transfers abroad are subject to congressional approval.

“US Energy Secretary Rick Perry has approved six secret authorizations by companies to sell nuclear power technology and assistance to Saudi Arabia, according to a copy of a document seen by (the news service) on Wednesday,” adding:

“Perry’s approvals, known as Part 810 authorizations, allow companies to do preliminary work on nuclear power ahead of any deal, but not ship equipment that would go into a plant, a source with knowledge of the agreements said on condition of anonymity.”

A Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) statement said

“each of the companies which received a specific authorization for (Saudi Arabia) have provided us written request that their authorization be withheld from public release.”

During House Energy and Commerce Committee testimony, Mike Pompeo was accused of attempting to circumvent congressional control over nuclear technology sales to foreign nations.
