PROJECT FEAR - REALITY STRIKES

PROJECT FEAR - REALITY STRIKES

The UK economy shrank 0.4 per cent in April as Brexit paralysis took hold following the proposed deadline for departure from the EU.

The latest monthly fall was four times larger than analysts had forecast and marked the second consecutive month of contraction for the UK’s economy after a 0.1 per cent drop in March.

The slowdown in April was not limited to manufacturing. The construction sector also shrank by a more modest 0.4 per cent while services stagnated.

The pound weakened against the US dollar following the disappointing figures, dropping 0.4 per cent to $1.27.

Brexit paralysis, eh ?

Surely growth will resume next month, as the deliveries of unicorns and fairy dust overcome the mad economic panic, none of which has anything to do with Brexit really. The cavalry will ride over the hill to guide us to the sunny uplands as we take back control and bask in the glow of blue passports and a fish mountain when the boat comes in. How can we fail ? We are the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. For now, anyway. The land of James Dyson, of Tim Martin, of Boris Johnson and Michael Gove. Invincible.

The history books in a couple of hundred years time will read like a script from Fawlty Towers.

In all seriousness, I have ceased to marvel at just how much a group of people are prepared to destroy the very fabric of our society in order to satisfy their own perverse dogmatic urges. It's beyond satire.

Time for bed.

source ignorance, or malicious intent! manufacuring is down year on year since free trade started. add sanctions and tariffs over the past few years manufacturing has been the hardest hit. not neglecting china is the Global mainstay of manufacturing beginning in the late 90s.

ah, how do I copy and drop the chart from april to today?

droping to, I miss read that! thought it said drop by. still reporters know little about the economy about as much as I know. actually less, unless they know the definition of economy!

One in Nine (11%) are in jobs defined as 'insecure employment' - jobs such as zero hours contracts etc.

Hardly something to be proud of.

Many more have been driven (sanctioned) off the Jobless total, a large number unfairly having been deemed fit to work but physically or mentally unable to do so.. Many have either died or committed suicide - I wonder if Roc is proud of that too.

We didn't have slow downs before the brexit vote or job losses and world trade had/has nothing to with any of it? :ooer:

We've had the biggest devaluation in the £ ever and companies are flooding out, maiming communities.

We're in the first quarter of recession but it's your TV licence that is important...

You forget black Wednesday.

You forget 2008

It was a reduction in growth not a contraction of the economy so no first quarter of recession at all.

What, exporters are leaving because the pound has been devalued? That makes sense.

I bet we'll get fewer tourists from Europe now as well.

If there's such a thing as an economic illiterate you're it.
