Best health service in the world I don't think.

Five year cancer survival | How we compare with the best

Pancreatic
UK 7.9%
Australia 14.6%

Lung
UK 14.7%
Canada 21.7%

Oesophageal
UK 16.2%
Australia 23.5%

Stomach
UK 20.8%
Australia 32.8%

Ovarian
UK 37.1%
Australia 43.2%

Bowel
UK 58.9%
Australia 70.8%

Rectal
UK 62.1%
Australia 70.8%

Time that we actually copied something that Europe (and Australia) does do best, health services, the Bismarck model with compulsory health insurance.

This Is Why So Many Americans Are Deathly Afraid Of Going To The Hospital…

What you are about to read in this article is likely to make you very angry. Once upon a time, the primary mission of our hospitals was to help people, but today they have become vicious financial predators. Many Americans try very hard to avoid visiting the hospital because of what it might cost, but if an emergency happens there is no choice.

They often get us when we are at our most vulnerable, and they never explain to us in advance how much their services will actually cost. And then eventually when the bills start arriving we discover that they have charged us 30 dollars for a single aspirin or “$2,000 for a $20 feeding tube”. It is a giant scam, but they have been getting away with it for decades, and so they just keep on doing it. And many hospitals go after those that are not able to pay their ridiculous bills extremely aggressively. Just consider the following example which comes to us from USA Today…

Heather Waldron and John Hawley are losing their four-bedroom house in the hills above Blacksburg,

It's the neoliberal way Ray. Public services have to be run down, starved of investment and sold off piecemeal until the public consent to a private system. Then they can face what the US does in due course.

Or vote JC's Labour to change direction.

Welcome to Tory Britain.

Under Labour, cancer survival rates were much increased, and satisfaction with the NHS was at an all time high.

The wreckers have had ten years to run it down, and make it ready (cheap) for a US takeover.

It's a well known tactic of the right, Thatcher did precisely that to several institutions before flogging them off for a song.

My mum died from Oesophageal cancer 5 years ago. She was forced to travel 80 miles every day for weeks on end for her treatment, while desperately ill. When she finally ended up in our local hospital (in and out of 'special measures at least twice under the Tories) her treatment was frankly dire. The best person there, with the most time for her was the bloody tea lady - nurses were always tied up filling in forms, having to ignore elderly people desperate to go to the toilet. There's plenty more to that story, just be assured that I have seen the effects of under-investment and under-staffing first hand. And it was (and still is) a deliberate government policy. And no, it wasn't full of foreigners. Every person in mum's ward (about 12) were white, elderly, frightened local people. The foreigners were the nurses and doctors.

Rant over.

The Tories are encouraging cancer...

...why do you support them, Ray, now that you care so much for its victims?

LOL, you're so predictable, and basically a simpleton, read the article, it's a 20 year study, we've been dragging behind for decades, including when Labour were in power.

Throwing money at the NHS will never work as it's an outdated model, and basically Stalinist.

The Bismarck system isn't perfect, but as the article says, they're decades ahead of the NHS.

No, it doesn't say that.

It does say however...

A spokesman for the NHS said: “This report is based on out of date data and in the five years since the study’s research ends, cancer survival has actually hit a record high, thanks to improvements in NHS cancer services, including the introduction of revolutionary treatments like proton beam therapy and immunotherapy.

"The NHS Long Term Plan will build on this progress by ramping up action to spot more cancers at the earliest possible stage when the chance of survival is higher, saving tens of thousands more lives every year.”

20 year study, which means 11 of those 20 years Labour were in government.

This isn't a party political issue anyway, or shouldn't be, the NHS isn't fit for purpose and is falling further and further behind.

Ever increasing layers of management is one of the major problems, Guardian-reading women creating jobs for other Guardian-reading women, money that should be going on medical treatment.

The other problem is GPs as "gatekeepers", or really jocks of all trades and masters of none, they miss 2 out of 3 cancers.

Patients should be allowed to go straight to specialists like in France and other countries.
