Don't know if the British follow basketball much..

-But Kobe Bryant just died in a helicopter crash.
One of the top 5 BB players ever.

-Think of as equivalent to Pele,Maradonna in their sport.

I guess whenever someone who is such a huge public figure it affects us in a strange way.
Reminding us of the fragility of life...Strange but true phenomenon.

Reminds one of golfer Payne Stewart's demise in a Lear Jet crash and footballer Emiliano Salah who also died in a plane crash recently.

The link is small planes or helicopters not on normal flight plans and often a case of poor pilot judgement.

No doubt he will join the list below. R.I.P.

But to get back to my original point/purpose of bringing up the death.
What is it about celebrity deaths that cause such personal reactions among people who dont know them at all exc thru TV/media??
Is it that part of peoples fantasy lives take a hit???

there are a weird combination of reactions among people. I think its tied into sportsfandom...people caring so much about their sports teams that they get depressed over their team losing. Its just a bit bizarre...esp since the teams dont give one damn about them.

I think may fans feel like they "know" the celebrity to some degree / identify with them / feel like they are part of their lives so their death comes as a loss. It's not rational of course but human beings are not pure reason. We are governed as much by our hearts and traditions and customs than our heads (more so in my opinion.)

It is also a reminder of our own morality. If the rich and the famous cannot overcome the odds of death striking at any moment what chance do the rest of us have?

Apparently the pilot was given clearance to fly in 'worse than normal' weather conditions. Whatever the outcome of the investigation, the crash has devastated more than one family.

It's very sad to hear, even sadder to hear his daughter died with him, and sadder even more to hear of the number of people on the chopper when it crashed with not one surviving.
But saddest of the lot is hearing that the police etc had grounded their choppers due to heavy fog.

I don't think he's well known over here. Never seen anyone talk about him. Saw his basketball compatriot Lebron in Trainwreck at the cinema when he played a very brief cameo role in it - and at first I thought it was him.
