Coronavirus: Positive News

Postby Red Okktober » Thu Mar 19, 2020 12:11 pm

Amid all the doom and gloom surrounding the virus, how about a thread for the good news?

On Wednesday, China reported not a single new domestic case of the virus for the first time since the outbreak began, a huge milestone. This includes Wuhan. They had a handful of imported cases from people returning to the country from elsewhere, but whatever they are doing domestically seems to be working. This puts a 3 month timescale on the length of their domestic infection. Not as bad as many feared.

Hokkaido in Japan, the worst hit area of the country, reported just 3 new cases, and is lifting it's state of emergency.

Excellent news, if accurate.

They must be hoping that the millions with no immunity (herd or otherwise) don't resume infecting each other again once they go back to work, use public transport etc.

It will take a bit of back and forth as when to self-isolate and quarantine, so I imagine you will get new spikes of cases after they have died down. That's to be expected. But any new spikes should affect far fewer people than the initial outbreak, and therefore be easier to deal with.

While this is going on, we are all the while learning about the virus, and are of course getting nearer to a universal vaccine.

Fair comments all round.

Worth bearing in mind though that an efficient and safe vaccination is still expected to be over a year away. 97% of prototype vaccinations that reach the stage of being tested on humans still fail to protect against the target virus to any appreciable degree.

It's very much a hit and miss process, as the virus has to be modified at a molecular level.

In other countries restrictions were introduced because the spread got too fast for their health services to cope, a breathing space (almost literally) was needed to let them catch up) let's hope we don't end up in the same place

Good news indeed !

I have a feeling that I only started to watch it after 3 or 4 series - a great chance to catch the early ones, we were both fans.

NBC are reporting on an experimental drug that could work as treatment for coronavirus (as opposed to being a vaccine). Full clinical trial results due at the end of next month:

There are also claims that Interferon, previously used to treat HIV and Cancer patients, reduces recovery average times from 11 days to 4 days.

In the UK we were subject to the not so subtle messaging that this is going to continue for at least the next twelve weeks and probably more.

It wasn't that well hidden, the conversation effectively went

Boris: I think we can really turn this around in the next 12 weeks
Media: As little as 12 weeks isn't that bit optimistic?
Boris: Yes it is optimisitic. When I say 12 weeks I'm being really optimistic it will probably be more.
Media: So it will probably be more than 12 weeks?
Boris: Yes. At least 12 weeks and probably more.
Media: Did we mention it would be twelve weeks?

BJ - I am conscious as days have gone by that people will want to know how long we are expecting them to keep it up, and I wanted to say something today about how I see the timescale of this campaign and where we are going ..... and I have been looking at it and do believe that we can turn the tide in the next 12 weeks.

Media - are you saying that if all the rules are followed, people are likely to be able to go on their holidays this summer?

BJ - I'm very confident that we can get this done, that we can turn the tide in the next 12 weeks, but it depends on collective resolute action.

Media - You haven't defined what 'turn the tide actually means'.

BJ - We don't know where we are with this. I'm not going to sit here and say that the tide will be turned by the end of June...

Media - ???
