Bangladesh factory fire: Owner arrested after blaze kills 52

Postby Cactus Jack » Sun Jul 11, 2021 7:34 am

Police in Bangladesh have arrested the owner of a factory where at least 52 people died in a fire late on Thursday.

Abul Hashem, the owner of Hashem Foods, and four of his sons were among eight people detained on Saturday. Police say they all face murder charges.

Authorities said many of those who died were trapped inside the building because a main exit was locked.

Children were among the victims and a separate inquiry into the use of child labour has been launched.

Bangladesh labour minister Monnujan Sufian told AFP news agency that she had been to a hospital and spoken to survivors as young as 14.

"If child labour is proved, we will take action against the owner and the inspectors," she said.

The next time you hear or see a news story complaining about 'regulations' or 'elf and safety' remember this story because it's what happens when corporations are 'free to do business without red tape'.

They are free to kill people without consequences?

Maybe I should incorporate.

No of course not but serious fires here tend to have long drawn out inquiries, such as the one for this fire in London which killed 72 people. The inquiry is still ongoing.

And I'm sure London has some pretty strict regulations.

And oddly enough this tower was built for and owned by the "regulators".

It was not built by them. Nor was it owned by them.

Nor did regulators carry out the renovations that put in the deadly cladding

So is that two deliberate lies and a misleading omission or are you just hopelessly misinformed again?

For information the firm that carried out the rennovation was Rydon who documented their objections when the Conservative run council insisted the work be carried out for less than the £11.28 million required to carry out the job to the required standard.

So the council owned the building?

Guess they should have made sure it was safe.

Guess no one told them that was their responsibility..

Your understanding of the law is so limited it's impossible to know where to start.

And no amount of evidence will convince you that contractors are responsible for the work they carry out, which is good for any contractor who carries out any work on any property you ever own.

OK.

The council did nothing wrong. Arrest the contractors.

Yes Kensington and Chelsea TMO, one of the wealthiest councils in the country with private properties costing millions. The cause was the type of cladding used which is illegal on properties over 20 metres in quite a few countries, including yours, but not UK. Residents had voiced their concerns long before the fire but their warnings fell on deaf ears.

And worse still, a couple of links showing the corruptness involved - and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

If your talking about corruption and government, you're preaching to the choir.
