They get care, and it costs them nothing, except possibly their health or life.
Thats one aspect of where your system and ours differs. Our armed forces get excellent healthcare and if serving overseas, depending on the accident/illness, would be repatriated via air to UK. If ex-forces they still receive the same level of healthcare as civilians - why shouldn't they?
Like you, I too don't like our "government run part" as this lot ignored their own Pandemic Preparedness strategy three years back in favour of saving a few quid. Result being when we were hit by the pandemic, stocks of PPE were hopelessly inadequate and much of it was out of date stock.
Given chance the Tories would privatise it for the wealthy and the less well off would suffer. They've been hacking away at it for years.
This chap isn't a politician and not affiliated to any party. He's boss of the NHS and this is what he had to say about Brexiters false claim of sending £350m to the EU every week, and promising "lets fund our NHS instead".
1) Your ex forces get the same level of care as our's.
2) Most Brits have no idea what our healthcare looks like.
1) I can only speak for this countries ex-forces and I know because of my son. I don't know what level your ex-forces get.
2) Most Americans have no idea what our healthcare looks like either! Trump had you lot (oops, I mean yall) fainting in shock as he described the scene of a "well known city centre London hospital - the floors - covered in blood - they have knives over there ya know - knives, knives, knives!"
Naturally he came out with that tripe just as yall had another shootout at the OK Corall.
One of our leading neurosurgeons challenged him to visit the London hospital he worked. I think he wanted to search for a brain cell. Typically Trump never took up the challenge and wet his nappy instead.
