Specifically, texting and smart phone messaging.
Whilst you do still see it, talking on the mobile whilst driving is nowhere near as prevalent as it was, and though dangerous, at least most drivers kept their eyes on the road.
Texting and messaging whilst driving is a whole different ball game and personally I think it is a dangerous as drink/drug driving because those who do it, are totally unaware of what is going on in front or around them.
This is just one recent case and there have been others and I believe it will soon become one of the major cause of motor accidents and deaths, in the very near future. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-humber-23876320#
Driving a truck gives me a vantage point that others don't always have and I can honestly tell you, I can see as many as 20 or more instances, every night, from those doing it whilst waiting at traffic lights or roundabouts to those doing it whilst driving at speed on motorways, it is becoming an epidemic.
Normally, I don't even have to see them doing it, I can tell by the way a vehicle is behaving in front of me to know what they doing. A few weeks ago I was even stuck behind an erratically driven motor scooter, swerving, speeding up and slowing down only to see him messaging on his phone, he was totally unaware that I even existed until he got the shock of his life when I eventually was able to pass him.
I think that until the punishments currently used for Drink/Drugs driving are used on texting and messaging, users will increase and so will the accidents and deaths on our roads.
