Seriously, I am Worried - Should I be?

Thanks for all the replies, I suppose I am worrying unduly and too early, she's only two weeks old but it just feels a lot longer and I should be more positive.

Like someone said, she was a good weight at birth so the loss of weight isn't life threatening and she is keeping food down and not continuing to lose, so thats a good thing. I just can't get my head around the fact that someone can take in food and not have it show in any way? having said that, she always seems satisfied after a feed so it must be doing something. :dunno:

Anyway, I have made it up with my daughter, not flying off the handle will be key to maintaining that and I must remember she is anxious too and I won't help by adding to her stress.

Baby looks absolutely fine, see thats the thing, in every respect she looks and acts just like a new born baby should not a sign of anything untoward or anything to indicate any problems, just this failure to put on weight is confusing and exasperating.

They will be going to the children's unit today as arranged so at least they're on top of it, hopefully things will begin to improve from now on. I was told it can take up to two weeks for some babies to stabilise and start putting weight on in a reguarl pattern, so lets hope it's all good from here on in.

Thanks again for the replies, I will keep you informed of any developments.

It's common for babies to lose weight after birth, the type of formula is irrelevant unless she is lactose intolerant but that would manifest itself in a completely different way!

How funny is that? I have used the term 'tongued tied' a million times but never knew it was an actual 'thing' just thought it a term of phrase.

Yes she is tongued tied, my daughter was told that when she was still in hospital after the birth, it's why she couldn't breast feed.

Since baby didn't and still doesn't have any problems taking a bottle teat they won't be doing anything about it, saying it will rectify itself in due course. They only operate to release it in cases where baby can't suckle at all or finds it really difficult, those occasions are relatively rare though.

As far as lactose intolerant goes, the tests would have highlighted that wouldn't they? only I have a 2nd cousin who was that and it wasn't spotted until late, he is over 40 now but has a mental age of about 12 and noticable physical handicaps.

Of course that was a long time ago and I'm sure diagnosis procedures have improved immensely since then. The first signs he showed of it were when still a baby, one of his eyes turned inward.

I am still over the moon but some of that elation has gone with news that she has not put on any weight since birth and in fact has lost quite a bit, relatively speaking, from a birth weight of 9lb 3 oz.

Now I'm not sure of all the facts and details but I think that at an 11% or more drop from birth weight initiates the midwife referring the baby to hospital, which has been done. Trying to be brief, this has resulted in several overnight stays in the past 10 days.

During these times lots of tests have been done, including bloods and even overseeing my daughter's feeding procedure and methods, these were fine and they can find no underlying medical problems. In fact they say she is a normal healthy baby in every other respect than this and are at a loss to explain it. Currently she is back at home.

At this point she has not lost any more weight but hasn't gained any either. Now Friday just gone, the health visitor turned up and within 10 minutes so did the midwife, as she is getting daily visits at present. There was some disagreement between these two ladies which wasn't resolved when they both eventually left.

An hour or so later, the health visitor returned saying she wasn't happy leaving things as they were and had made an appointment for that afternoon with a doctor at the children's unit at the hospital, all previous visits had been to the natal unit. He repeated the tests for his own peace of mind and found everything to be ok.

Baby is now under him as an outpatient and they are due back to see him on Monday.

What I'd like to know is how long they will let this carry on before someone does something about it, FFS? it just seems to me that because she hasn't lost any more weight they are sitting back waiting until she does before they decide to do anything else, whatever that might be? :dunno:

The way I look at it, she may not be dangerously under weight at the moment and 'stabilised' but there has to be a reason as to why she isn't taking on calories or nutrients.....what are we supposed to wait until this affects her little body, possibly causing irreversible damage until they are prepared to delve into it further? FFS!

I'm more than a bit angry and really worried, do you think I'm 'overracting' and it's best to leave it in the hands of 'experts' or are my concerns valid?

PS. Does anyone else know of similar cases? ..... only a midwife at the hospital told my daughter's partner that she has only ever seen this loss of weight when a baby can't keep it's food down, for medical reasons or sometimes in premature births. None of these apply to my granddaughter.

Yes my daughter lost weight until week 4 then she put it on. She kept her food down and wasn't born prematurely. I've not been online and congratulations. :header:

Sorry to bump this up, TJ, but loads of people engaged in the thread.

How's she doing? And can I ask what the specialist said when he saw her on Monday?

Otis would recommend you 'try a little tenderness' with your daughter in future.
A new mother doesn't need people around her to panic.

Yep sorry Vam, I should have done the decent thing.

Anyways, she gained a couple of ounces before losing it again after a bout of the trots caused by antibiotics for a minor infection.

The doctors stopped the antibiotics and the trots cleared up, as of Monday she had regained what she lost and added a further 3 oz. Is drinking bottles for England now, so fingers crossed it looks as if we can put it all behind us.

What would Lift Manufacturers know about that sort of thing? ..... apart from the panic bit when you get stuck in one.
