Why does Feminism get a bad press?

Postby Text » Mon Mar 12, 2018 11:01 pm

It seems to be regarded as almost a dirty word by some.
Some once said ''for women to be against feminism is like fish being against water.''

If the term is stripped of the myths surrounding it and the various motely groups trying to hitch a ride on it, (like eg the #Metoo movement) .... and we get down to the basics of the true meaning, we'd realise that anyone can (and probably should) be a feminist.

AIMS:
The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of the equality of the sexes.
OR:
To define, establish, and achieve political, economic, personal, and social equality of sexes.

Do anti-fem's regard fem's as men haters?
Do they think fem's are activists and militants, who wave placards waving and go on protest marches?
Do they think they are mostly lesbians?

Personally I regard myself as a feminist but none of the above 3 statements applies to me.

Some famous feminists >
Angela Jolie, Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence, Meghan Markle

Some famous anti-feminists (and their reasons for being so) >
Condoleeza Rice ''I am a conservative pro Life woman''
Thatcher - ''It never did anything for me''
Geri Halliwel "It's about labeling. For me feminism is bra-burning lesbianism.''
Madonna "I prefer the term 'Humanist' , it's less alienating''.
Susan Sarandon "It’s a bit of an old-fashioned word."
Musician Kelly Clarkson ''I want to be taken care of, by a man who is a leader''

So, ...what are your views as to why some people are so timid around the whole issue of feminism?

It's about the person and how they go about things, I don't think about what someone identifies as per se. Some people who identify as a feminist will annoy me, and some won't.

In most cases the person and how they go about things is the most important thing, not what they identify as.

There are some who come across as anti-men, and that doesn’t help the image of feminism. Same with men’s rights activists, it’ll be the extreme and angry ones who give it a bad name. Most reasonable people would see the strive for equality as a good thing, obviously, but some would see trampling on the rights of the opposite sex as an acceptable means for their cause.

Much of what we see as misogyny and misandry in our culture can’t be changed thru legislation. Attitudes take time to catch up.

Pretty much what Nucks said.
They get a bad name because it’s a label attached to just about every kind of female activist. The good ones, the fucking terrible ones, and the weird ones.

Feminism is often laughed at or mocked by both men and women because the days of it being about equality were over years ago. You only need to look online to see why it’s become a dirty word and there’s endless examples of those feminazi types. If people really wanted equality across the board they’d not only focus on one gender. Hardly rocket science is it.

And that's it ^^^. Women have many facets, feminism being just one of them. I consider myself to be a feminist, but for me it means, the sexes being equal but different. I enjoy the differences which are innate, in my opinion. I actually think in some instances, in some cultures., life can be easier for females. In many ways, I worry more about my boys than I do my girls.

It gets a bad press for the same reason anyone/group fighting for equality does; fear, that more for the people fighting for equality, means less for the dominant group.

Feminism isn't much about equality these days, it's about getting even (with men). My opinion.

I'm in favour of egalitarianism.

And by equality I mean equality of opportunity. Men and women will never be equal for a long time, in terms of thinking, genetic makeup etc.

The World Economic Forum estimates that absolute and unequivocal gender parity is still at least 200 years away.

Bloody men! :grrrrr:
