Don't urinate on them when they are crying on the floor.

No. I don't think that's true. I think if you love someone and they know you have their best interests at heart then.. You can give them a good boot of truth when they're on the floor. Followed by help.

If someone is a little bit broken inside, it could be from years of being downtrodden, so there is no quick-fix. Suggest a visit to the GP for a counselling referral or help them with a self-referral to one of the various services available. It’s something they have to want to do, and I get how that can seem a catch-22 situation but it’s true. Good luck. :smilin:

I think it depends very much on the individual whose self-esteem has been lost - and why. What will work like a dream for one person might have no impact on another.

It's important to establish why that person is so lacking in self-confidence and self-worth - and focus efforts on those areas. If the loss of self-esteem is due to the actions of other people, then it's important to ensure that this is made clear and that the person you are trying to help does not turn everything in on themselves. However, if their self-esteem is low because of their own actions, it's important that they work on this carefully. Making impetuous decisions and acting irrationally might make matters worse.

If they feel like this because of a situation which is outwith their control, offer reassurance and support. Sometimes things just happen... but they don't usually stay the same way forever.
