The problem arises from stupid people who erroneously attach certain attributes to a piece of cloth, attached to a stick. It's not the flag - or even the act of flying it which is the issue - it's the manufactured underlying sentiment behind it which generates the problem. The flag does not possess these attributes itself - they are social constructs and as such, they can easily be de-constructed.

Racism is an irrational dislike or antipathy towards a particular group of people, based on inherited biological characteristics. That has nothing to do with any flags. Racists don't need flags in order to advertise the fact that they are racists.

Yes, it certainly CAN be a symbol... but without the philosophy and doctrine which underpins it, the symbol itself should be considered to be perfectly innocuous.

As you well know, the swastika motif is present in Hindu and Buddhist iconography - as well as some other religions. Its misuse by the Nazis does not re-define its significance to those faiths which identify with it.

Vicky mentioned this in the footie thread this morning, this was my answer which I think is probably why.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that, if I remember rightly, it's similar to the flag of the former USSR state of Georgia and was a symbol of their struggle for independence from the former Soviet Union, which might upset a few Russians.

I didn't have time to look it up this morning but now I have, it looks even more likely.
